By default, when you put it into reverse, there is an (annoying) continuous beep, which IMO detracts from the parking sensor sound, so people turn it off by disconnecting the lead. It you drop the trim panel (3 x philips No2 screws) you'll probably notice the pulled out plug if yours isn't doing this.

Mike
I think if you've got a continuous beep it's identifying an issue with your PDC system.

Mine does not do a continuous beep but starts beeping when near objects. My "gong" device is all plugged in a functioning. I.e when the lights are left on etc.

I remember in the E46 a continuous beep when reverse is engaged is to signal a problem with your parking sensors. Presumably it's the same for the zed.
No, not at all. The continuous sound will be interrupted by beeping as you get near to things. I think it's to remind our "American" friends that they are actually in reverse :D

Mike
I think we're going to need a poll here, where's Marlon when you need him? Been out to my car. Popped it in reverse with nothing behind me, silence. As I get near to objects it starts to beep. The beeps increase in speed as you get closer until your so close you get a continuous beep.

I stand by my original comment that if you have a constant beep when in reverse, even with nothing behind you then you have an error in the system. It's how the E46 system worked. If yours does this Mike, I'd say you've got an error (maybe one dead sensor). It's to warn you that it might not be functioning correctly. Have a Google.

The Z4 from the factory has the "reverse warning" enabled, ie the tone as soon as you put it into reverse. This then swaps for the intermittent beeps when the parking sensors get in range of an object, progressing to faster beeps and a final continuous one.

Ah maybe we're lost in translation. I thought you meant you had a continuous beep. :D

As is mine, because I have pulled the wire! Before, it used to sound as soon as I put it into reverse.

Hmmm, how odd! All my previous BMW's have functioned the same as my E85 (Z3M, E46 M3).. i.e. no sound at all when putting into reverse, then intermittent beep when approaching object.

The only time I have had a continuous beep on engaging reverse was with a duff sensor on the M3.

I don't think it's anything codeable either..at least I've never seen it on Carly.

Reverse gear warning IS codeable.

Mine doesn't have the reversing sensors and is a manual, but does has the buzzer connected. When I select reverse I get a regular intermittent pinging sound. No constant sound etc. After reading the above im not sure if mine is different due to it being a manual or pdc free car

Manual pdc equipped coupe.
Buzzer appears properly connected.
Mine behaves like Roundozo and ph001.

Page 50 in the manual says " You can arrange for a signal to be provided as confirmation that PDC is active" so this must have been coded in by the dealer at the customers request. Mine doesn't do it.
It then goes on to say "If a continuous signal at a pitch higher than usual is heard when the system is first activated, it is malfunctioning. "

Mine, 2004 Alpina with PDC, pop it into reverse, regular pings until I get close to an object then the PDC beeps start and get closer together as I reverse towards the object, finally turns into a constant beep when I'm really close.

Hmmm? I don’t think backup beepers are required here, we also don’t have transmission lock into park if the seatbelt isn’t fastened. That was a pissoff when I had my E89 reprogrammed and it had the euro program put in, couldn’t back out of my garage without using the brake and the gas pedal at the same time. Anyway , I will have a peek under the dash just out of curiosity.
