Ok,

About to start in this, so thought I'd post a new thread.

One thing that I have noticed reading previous threads on this, is that the mirrors will fold from the button, WITHOUT the module fitted.. And that people are saying that although they can be made to fold on locking there is no way to get them to unfold automatically.

This got me thinking, "what the hell does the module do then?"

So I opened it to have a look, and to my mind there is a lot more in there than would be required to simply fold or unfold them, and as the folding works without the module (which I'll confirm later) then WTF?

Anyway, to me it looks like there IS an aerial in there, so surely it must accept a radio signal from the key??

Looking forward to updates! I have mine wires in from mirror to switch.... but. I module fitted.... I havnt tried to even see if they automatically fold from the button as assumed they wouldn’t without the module?!

I would have though it wouldnt directly receive a signal from the key. Surely it's activated in the same way the central locking, windows and roof are, indirectly so to speak.

You would think so, but why the antenna?

Be interesting to see where this goes. I've already got powerfold, but always wanted to activate the function via key...

And they are on and working. Needed to make changes to the drivers door loom as they came from a facelift and the wiring for the window motor is different. My passenger door loom was already fully populated as it's an early one, but the drivers was missing a few wires. Just gonna fit the leds into the door handles whilst I've got the membranes off.

If your refurbishment skills are going to extend to power fold mirrors then I might have to drive up to Merseyside! :D

Lol, the problem isn't the fitting, it's getting hold of the things!

Dont you think its a shunt?
Hard to tell/see by the angle of the pcb.

Not sure, took some pics of the IC's to see if any of them are an RF receiver.

Ok,

Didn't have time to put car back together, as wanted to get the handle LED's in whilst doors stripped, so will finish tomorrow.

Quick vid of the folding driver's;

And passenger's - Still on the seat as I wanted to check if the original loom would work, as the mirror connector was fully populated - It did! No idea why the driver's wasn't as mine is an early car, and as such the wiring for cruise and the mirror module was there.. Mind you, the wiring for the MFSW wasn't - Go figure!

Couple of things that I noticed;

Firstly, the fold button is a single "press to make" type, NOT a latching button, which is handy because if I can't get them to fold/unfold automatically, it shouldn't be too difficult to rig up a relay behind the fusebox between the GM5 and mirror modules. This could be used to trigger the mirrors when the central licking is activated.

Secondly, the mirror fold function seems to be "always live" even with the car locked and "gone to sleep" ie the mirror fold still works, so I can't see why it cannot be coded, BUT the fact it's always on means it should be easier to rig up the relay.

One interesting snippet I came across whilst studying the wiring diagrams on TIS earlier, is that whereas we all thought the mirror heaters are always on, they aren't;

It's just that it never gets above 25 degrees in the UK - However, what a stupid temperature to set as the cutoff?
