Door handle not working from outside

Post by Marco » Sun Oct 29, 2017 11:27 am

Hi Everyone, my driver's side door handle is not working. It has been pretty sticky and hard to open for a while now, and the other day felt like the cable snapped, so it doesn't open at all from the outside now (opens from inside the car).

I've looked through previous posts and I think what has happened is the Bowden Cable has stretched/snapped.

A few questions:

-Where can I get the Bowden Cable from, and how do I make sure it is the one connecting the external door handle (not internal)?
-Has anyone replaced this themself? and if so, is there a "how to" somewhere?
-Is there anyone that comes recommmended to do this job for me (preferably near the Farnborough area)?

Thanks,
Marco

Door handle not working from outside

Post by Denholme » Mon Aug 20, 2018 1:09 pm

Hi, i know its an old thread but though i would add to it. I have a sticky door handle on my Z4, i can easily find the cable on Ebay for about £8 and priced it from BMW Edinburgh and its about £16. Thought that wasnt too bad a price so asked them to include fitting.... £164.23. That took me by surprise, so going to have a ring around to some other so called specialists and see what they charge or if i get the chance this weekend I will give it a try myself. I so does anyone have any advice on changing the cable? Cheers

I had this issue before also. Turned out to be the carrier inside the door that had broken, I think the part was around €100 to buy and same again to fit. It’s a fiddly install so I left it to someone who knew what they were doing.
