Would like to borrow - AFe Stage 2 Heat Shield

Post by dans6490 » Mon Sep 25, 2017 4:53 pm

Following on from the air scoops, I'm thinking of making a (very similar) copy of the Afe stage 2 heat shield, which fully encloses the filter.

I can definitely cut the shape, bend, weld and powder coat them easily and for a lot less money than Afe charge.

The issue is that I need one to borrow one, to measure and produce a near-exact replica.

So the question is, does anyone have one to lend for a few weeks max. It's a long shot I know but maybe someone's car is starting hibernation and would like to help out?

I've had a message today asking and the end goal is to offer these on the forum, should people be interested.

Any and all comments welcomed

Haha, I’ve just pmed you as thought you may have some input!! Looked on here and you’d beat me too it!!

Afaik they fit all models but would be easy to make. I’ve not heard one personally but they’re supposed to sound really good.

I have an AFE intake and coincidentally I’m about to remove it from my car.

Where are you based dans6490?

Now that is a coincidence!! I’m near Worcester, West Mids.

Are you removing to sell or just maintenance?

I’m removing it to trial the standard air box with a K&N panel filter. It could also benefit from a re protection (powder coat) whilst removed as it’s been on the car for quite some time. I’m down in Surrey.

Hi Dan

Would you just be looking at the metal fabrication or looking into the replacement hose post-enclosure (i believe it hosts the MAF and joins into the plenum)?

I was initially thinking to sort the metal fabrication.

I’ve since also been thinking about the filter/hose as it would need to fit the hole enclosure properly. I had thought about making it, so that a K&N cone filter/hose would fit perfectly. They seem easily accessible and people could then source that part separately but also be sure it’ll fit.

Not sure how it would work if people wanted to use another brand as it might not be a good fit. Z4 3.0si will hopefully have one to lend shortly, so I can take a good look at how it’s set up and how the filter/hoses fits.

If anyone can think of another solution I’d be happy to listen

Kinda dragging up an old thread here (it popped up in a search result). Did this get anywhere? I'd certainly be interested if it did
