Nb, theoretically speaking mind!
Hi Sae, its more economical if you leave a car in gear on downhill sections as they use no fuel that way, if put in neutral the engine is still burning fuel in order to tick-over

I believe it is.

My A3 is more economical in 'drive' than it is in 'eco'. The only difference is it doesn't knock itself into neutral when the throttle stops being applied.

As above it is correct as in neutral the ecu keeps fuel travelling to the engine engine keeps the revs up to idle (around 800 rpm) to avoid cutting out whereas when coasting in gear you drop revs but the auto will change down if it drops too low (which never happens going downhill)

Does it smart coast like the Porsche Pdk?
I thought the Pdk also disengages drive so that there is no engine braking during coasting phase - although that was maybe the Pdk gen1 ?

Nb. On my old commute, I used to get about 4-5more mpg using in neutral method, as there were a few pretty long stretches of low downhill gradient that you could coast, however, if left in gear would slow car down enough to warrant hitting the gas.

I believe mine has smart coast in eco pro, very weird feeling so I don't use it but regularly get 53 mpg on the journey down to Bristol, not bad I feel given the engine and power train

According to some posts online coasting exists on Eco Pro mode but is not engaged in conjunction with Cruise. Some people say that Coasting puts the car into neutral but this makes no sense based on mine and other replied above. Also if I come to large inclines I tend to turn off the cruise to avoid major power boosts. Downhill unless its significant I do the same.

Im struggling to find accurate info on this so I might just have to experiment further. However in the long scheme of things there arnt enough inclines & declines on my normal routes to warrant a major difference..

It can be coded apparently, for some reason UK cars have this feature disabled.

That is stunning mpg and I am happy with around 40 out of a 640d and I am yet to see much better though, but I have read many times that both the 335d/435d deliver far better figures from the same engine and I would love to know why for sure.

I believe they are all of a similar weight and I know a 335d touring is only 45kg lighter than a 640d Coupe so it is interesting stuff, I have fuel economy envy...sad I know but that's really why we buy a diesel in the first place!

Maybe the answer is not to drive everywhere in Sport + :D

.....oh and my convertible weighs in at a giddy 1925 kg, though it feels lighter, the Merc felt very front heavy in comparison
