Hi all,
Bit of a long shot but I thought I’d see if anyone has experienced these codes before, either on their mini or perhaps with another model BMW.
Long story short when I put my foot down and get to about 4K RPM the check engine light flashes amber and the idrive says: ‘drivetrain malfunction. drive slowly and contact service.’ The car then runs like a bag of nails until switched off. Once switched off and on again the cars fine until accelerating above 4K.
Sounds like injectors to me? Car will be going to Mini ASAP, but it’s always nice to have an idea if possible.
The car is a 2016 Cooper S (petrol)

It's good to get the simple cheap-to-fix basics out of the way, I'd be eliminating a simple air intake pipe leak/split as they can be intermittent and self clearing. They play havoc with sensors causing 'limp mode' in a way that can be mistaken for cam sensor or injector issues.
2003 2.5 SE, low miles, Sterling Grey, 108's & Eagles, no stubby here! Unmolested.

thanks for the suggestion. I was thinking along the same lines RE hoses and did have a brief look but couldn’t see anything obvious. It’s off to an Indy Thursday so hopefully that will shed some lightEwazix wrote: ↑Sun Oct 04, 2020 7:45 pm It's good to get the simple cheap-to-fix basics out of the way, I'd be eliminating a simple air intake pipe leak/split as they can be intermittent and self clearing. Well if it was an N54 it would have high pressure fuel pump problem written all over it. Does it run direct injection do you know?

Apologies - To be honest I forgot I’d posted about this on here. The engine is a B48. I took the car to a specialist who swapped a coil pack and spark plug from cylinder 4 to one of the others, they took it home to give it a decent test drive afterwards and the fault just won’t return even a month on. Part of me wonders if it was some sort of glitch rather than a mechanical fault.

Glad it's sorted, it sounds like coil packs will be your first port of call if it happens again. Intermittent faults are a pain, it's much better when something just packs up
I had that generation of Cooper S and reliability was not great TBH, I PX'd it just before the warranty ended having had a HP Fuel pump, cam chain adjuster, oil leak and de-coke all done under warranty. The interior rattled like a bag 'o nails as well. Shame really as it was great fun to drive and very quick.
