E86 Z4 coupe and new Supra

Post by ColinBR » Tue Jun 09, 2020 12:05 am

Anyone else see such an striking similarity between the E86 coupe and the new Supra?

I know there was a collaboration between the 2 companies to a point, but you could honestly say that the new Supra is exactly what you would expect a revamped Z4 coupe to look like.

The rear end look is almost identical with the haunches.

You can hardly blame them. The Z4 always had a fine arse.

I think the front is more Datsun 240 though. Another great looking Coupe.

Basically it-s a formulated look. So most people are going to like it and see similarities with other cars. 8)

E86 Z4 coupe and new Supra

2 of my favourite cars bar none.
Z4 rear and 240Z front

Was actually contemplating restoring/updating a 240Z before deciding a Z4 coupe makes more sense due to time frame of putting a 240Z together.

Young family and all that

Not seen that before. Amazing resto-mod.

Can’t see the E86/Supra similarity myself, beyond the basic shape. They seem to have gone out of their way to differentiate it from BMW’s current look. It takes most of its inspiration from the FT1 concept.
2008 Z4MC: heavy wheels | crap suspension | skittish rear end | wobbly engine | not enough induction noise | underwhelming turn in | inconsistent braking | lardy battery | chubby steering wheel
2006 Z4 2.5si: gone

E86 Z4 coupe and new Supra

The 240Z was always, back in the day, considered a curious amalgram of both the big healey 3000, for robust handsomeness, and the almost sublime beauty and refined elegance of the Lyon / Sayer Jaguar E type. I struggle a bit to see the resemblance that buzyG does here, tbh.
I think Anders Warming no doubt closely watched by Chris Bangle pulled it off almost perfectly, with his interpretation of zunkunft, (force) and, in fact would say that the E86 profile has grown into its own space since release in late 2006. Still extremely contemporary, but no longer considered avante guarde, as we may think the current Supra as being.
Now in the fourth series and the sixth generation. Pretty good form (forgive the pun) for a 21st century stylist. :D

When the Supra was still camoflaged, I was convinced it was the new Z4 Coupe. The roof strikes, the rear shapes, everything was a modern day e86.
