Any TT RS owners, past or present?

Post by wonkydonkey » Sun Aug 18, 2019 12:51 pm

I'm looking to buy a 2009-2014 Audi TT RS in the near future. I'm not 100% decided on auto or manual, but as it'll be my daily car, there is an argument for it being my first automatic car. I plan on remapping it too - something the DSG clutch pack would deal with better than the manual clutch.

Has anyone on here ever owned one? Got any handy tips/suggestions for me as I embark upon my search? I owned a 2009 TT TDI S Line for a few years and loved it, so I can't see how having twice the power in the same chassis can be a bad thing?

Good cars, quick and sound lovely.

The only negative thing I know about them is the manual gearboxes had issues pre 2011.

I tested a sepang manual before getting the Z4M and it was a lovely effortless drive.

Interesting, I'll look into the gearbox issue, thanks. They are rather nice in Sepang Blue! The wingback seats are firmly on the wishlist also.

The one I tested had wingbacks, really nice seats.

The gearbox issue was probably related to modded cars

It would appear synchromeshes are the weak link, and even give trouble in standard cars. A good reason to lean towards the DSG perhaps.

Just a all round awesome machine , my son has had the full honours in fast VAGs , all sensibly modified & without question his TTRS was way out there in terms of being capable , fast , specced & in his ownership ( 12 months 70k 2010 manual) ultra reliable .
Now the negative :( & this might not be the same for you so don't be put off .
At the time he was about to part i fancied it as a winter weekender , we had agreed a price for me to buy it but each time we had been out & switched cars (i was ZMR at the time) i found the Audi dull & totally unconnecting from a drivers perspective , it was brutally fast in the straights & with mag ride it could do it in & out of the bends too but each time i got out felt little desire to drive it again .
His was decatted with full Miltek system , uprated intercooler & clutch running 435bhp , add the quattro system it was embarrassing trying to keep up in the ZMR .
Try one out , certainly have supercar performance figures for sub £20k :driving:

Thanks for that account mr wilks. I've had a few Audis now and I understand what you mean about the dullness. They're not very 'alive' but, in my TT in particular, the stability and sure-footedness outweighed my desire for tactility. My 3.0i E85 has been loads of fun but I've found the feel of electric steering to be less desirable than "Audi" steering. I could go for a Z4M for its hydraulic steering, but as I'd like to revert to having only one car for a bit, I'd rather have the refinement of the Audi over an E85/6. I'll miss the Z4's keen chassis and tuneful six, without doubt, but nothing's forever, as they say :) Your son's car sounds like a bit of a missile!

Great review here if you haven't seen it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jbn6P8UNth0 interesting point of note they weigh the same as a ZMR  yet oodles more torque from the 2.5T so no wonder they move like $hit through a goose :P

The ones with wingbacks appear to be the ones targeted most , one reason my son bought without them :(

Ugh. Well this is not really something I had factored in. Living in the peaceful Somerset countryside I forget that crime is a thing. Hmmm...
