M2 vs M4 vs M5 vs something else

Post by Woots » Sat Jul 20, 2019 6:54 am

After toying for quite a while over replacing my M140i with an Aston Vantage I’ve decided it’s just not the right time...my driveway isn’t clear from sap dropping trees and while my village is lovely, my commute to Tesco would end up leaving it in a place that is too attention getting for such a car, plus they’re so expensive to run

Which got me thinking back to the BMW VIP schemes...
Now if I stick with BMW I’ll maybe get the best deal for trading in my 68 plate M140i...but which one?!

M2’s are about £580 deposit down £580 per month
M4’s are about £690 deposit down £690 per month
M5’s are £860 deposit down £860 per month

Now the only real reason I’d want an M5 is because it’s rapid as hell and a £100k car for 850 a month is tempting, but it’s still a s**t ton of cash and tbh I think I’m maybe too young for a big comfy M5, albeit one with 600 odd hp

Interior of the M2 puts me off...as it’s too similar to my M140i which isn’t amazing
M4 is a good mix...although still not cheap and it’s at the end of its life cycle
Had deposit on an M2 CS but I think it’ll be too expensive for what you’ll get and it won’t be discounted price wise
Anything else? Second hand M4 CS would be nice but won’t be on a special offer and APR in used ones isn’t as competitive by some margin!
Any thoughts welcomed!

I feel for you Woots. The risk of trolley dings would be ridiculous as well.

I haven’t driven any of those cars, but I thought I’d read in multiple places that the M2 / M2 CS is the best M car around right now ?

As for the M5 - dude, you are not ready to be driving in your slippers
Current... Silver Grey ///M Roadster, non-flimper spec, Imola Red nappa, permanent ear-to-ear grin 8)

Previous... 3.0Si Sport Roadster, Black Sapphire, Dream Red leather with lots of toys and lots of mods...

I was hoping the CS would be a CSL but the rumours make it seem it won’t be and I know the monthlies wouldn’t be the same ‘deal’ level as the others

You’re right about the M5 and I know it’s just chucking near 900 away a month because...it’s an M5 and that’s what they do!

Yeah word on M2 is they’re the current one to get especially for someone young, good looking, fashionable (how come you don’t have one and still have the Zed)
I know the obvious is to ‘just drive some’ but if none of us typed out loud there would be no forums
M4 CS’s do look lovellyyyy in some shades and bits of carbon are nice. I guess I could take the VIP prices to local dealer and try to haggle them down and then say...can you sell me a BMW M4 CS from outside your network...?
Shame all of them sound a bit rubbish nowadays but I guess they’re all going that way!!
Hoping getting something more fun than a 140i will scratch the car itch and I can stop wasting my time and do some house redecorating!
The 140i is nice, but I’ve never gone ‘eff it I’m gonna go for a drive’

Do quite like the Alfa’s....
Only thing with getting approved used is the au high APR! The online quotes on AUC are same monthlies as brand new but 10x the deposit just because the APR’s are ridic high!
I get that brand new is throwing away money but so is dropping 6k for a second hand one...I think
Man maths is definitely needed here...
Now you’ve got me looking at Alfa’s again....

How practical do you need it to be? I might be tempted by the Alpine...

I think it is the romance of the breed and of course to each individual, the look. Certainly not based on any notion of technological innovation or out right speed.

For exactly these reasons I have never desired a 911. i just don't see any appeal in them whatsoever :? never have & can't see that changing. :P It just leaves me cold. :(

The Boxster Spider, on the other hand, has, for me at least, the best of both. 8) :driving:

Don't go for AUC finance - some of them are over 12% apr - you're not tied to them, get the loan from elsewhere then you can negotiate as a cash buyer....

When I bought my current 35iS I negotiated a great and unexpected trade in price on my E89 2.0 based on me taking out BMW finance which was near 11%, the dealership were just not interested in cash ! I paid the finance off over the phone a couple of days later incurring a couple of pounds interest.

Those options seem pretty good if you need the car as a daily runner for work and will do 12k miles a year. If it's a driveway ornament doing 3k miles then I really don't get giving BMW £25k for 3 years to then hand it back.

Spend £35k on a nice vantage and it'll give you £30k back in 3 years time.

Sort the suspension out on the M140i and fit an LSD and spend the rest on a nice holiday, how fast do you want to go :)

Otherwise I would go M2 Competition, small and nimble or M3 to cover family duties, the others to me are fast barges, the Aston, pipe and slippers :)

Its really down to what you want out of the car, if its just nipping down to the shops Fiesta ST/Suzuki Swift Sport :)

Agree on BMW AUC Finance, you will get raped and my experience of BMW AUC has always been poor, cars are never prepped and the ones I've always looked at have been thrashed, stone peppered etc.

Tim.
