X1 E84 non-runflat tyres

Post by oldgit » Thu Sep 13, 2018 11:23 pm

I found a big improvement to the ride when I got rid of the runflats on my Z4. My wife's X1 E84 will soon need new tyres and I suggested changing to conventional tyres to improve the ride.
Are there any members of this forum who have an X1 on conventional tyres? Would you recommend non-runflats for this car? If so, which tyres? I have looked on the xdrivers website and Goodyear F1 Asymmetric 2 are recommended.
Secondly, we would like to carry a spare wheel in the X1. Does anyone know if a spare from another BMW will fit?
The current tyres are Pirelli Cinturato 255/45 R18 on the front and Bridgestone Potenza 255/40 R18 on the rear.
Thank you.

I would go for the change to non runflats but for me it would depend if the car is an Sdrive or Xdrive.

Assuming that the car is and Xdrive I would make your choice very carefully, for instance you shouldn't really be running the vehicle in it's current form with different brands of tyre front and rear.

I can tell you of at least two situations where running BMW X3s on the wrong tyres has created transmission issues, do your research before committing

Tyreman.

Thank you for the info. My wife inherited the car (an Xdrive) from her late father. He had the car for less than a year so the previous owner must have mixed the tyres. We will replace all 4 soon.

Good choice, stick with any premium brand and you should be fine but I can fully recommend the Goodyear

Thank you.
I would assume that the front tyre size is 225/45R18 ?

Hi we had a BMW X1 E84 for 6 years , had runflats on to start off with but upgraded the wheels to 19" and went for Michelins , any premium brand will be good , I would check that the previous owner has not changed the wheels to 3 series or 5 series wheels as the 18" standard wheels are not staggered , tyres should be 225 45 18 as stated allround . if in doubt post a picture with the wheels on as you dont want to be running the wrong wheels on your car as they will have a different offset and may cause an accident .

Tyreman.

Yes. That is the size of the front tyres. Sorry for the typing error.

I don't want to have to rely on a can of tyre sealant. The only suitable spare I could find is a second hand space saver priced at £170. This would make changing to non-runflats an expensive exercise. We have decided to fit 4 new runflats - all the same size of course.
