Bit of advice buying a daily driver for the GF

Post by Wildfire » Wed Aug 29, 2018 12:57 pm

As some may know the DD Civic was written off last week whilst I was away.

Now we're looking to get a DD in place soon.

I don't fancy going miles away for it and have found a couple of cars that may fit the bill:

2009 Focus 1.8 Zetec
CAT D
95k
Some service history, from a trader.

or

2004 Golf GT FSi
92k
FSH, changed cam chain and water pump, private sale
The driver's door doesn't lock with the remote. I can fix this for around £100 and a couple of hours of my time.

Any opinions?

I'm off to look at them tomorrow.

Purely a subjective, personal view but I’d go for a Golf over the Focus every time..

Cheers guys. I spoke to the owner and he seems like a decent guy. Honest about the scratches etc. But his partner has had it for 10 years and it feels a bit more genuine.

Plus I can probably negotiate a bit of cash or to fix the door.

I would of thought the Focus would drive better than the Golf although I couldn't live with a Ford interior :|

I'm a fan of the mk1 BMW Mini's? Just throwing it out there! Pretty cheap all round and built well, with decent interiour to boot.

Bit of advice buying a daily driver for the GF

For a daily I would be more inclined to spend a bit more money and buy something newer and with lower miles regardless of it being a diesel.

2004 is still 14 years old, 95k isnt a lot but its old, will surely need some money spent on it sooner rather than later.

Another thing about dailies is you spend a lot of time in them, I would be more inclined to have a decent daily and a less inclined to have a better weekender as it will see more time and miles. Having something comfy, reliable and has the features that keeps you positive when your stuck in traffic would be my choice everyday.

Obviously depends on how far your traveling and miles you plan to do. Theres a guy up the road with an 04 focus ST170 it seems to be on axel stands more than it is driven.

Don't understand why so many people dislike Fords - as a DD an old style Focus fits the bill - cheap as chips , cheap to maintain , Diesels have cheap road tax and do 50+mpg average - well screwed together and comfortable - what more do you want as a DD.

Bought our Fiesta new in 2004 - now 91k miles - other than new tyres , a battery and servicing has never let us down - even the interior lokks as new as does the exterior - a Focus would be the same only bigger .

As regards the ones listed I personally wouldn't touch a Cat D though - plenty around that are sound for the same money .
