Audi R8...wow
So, looking to replace the missus TT and we're in a fortunate position to buy something interesting. There are a few contenders at £90k-100k mark, and we need to get out and drive them all before making a decision. We had the 2017 R8 for a short test drive on Friday....and wow, what a car. It's unbelievably fast and that V10 engine is simply mind-blowing. In 2nd gear at 8500rpm you're at the speed limit....which, is equally good as it is bad....it would be easily possible to get to speeds that would give you jail time in that car! I wonder if it's almost too competent as a road car that it might be boring when compared to the other rivals.
Funny getting back into the Z4MC after it, makes you realise how 'slow', but exploitable it is compared to modern stuff.

I spent a day in a 911 GTS - stupidly fast. I'm not saying I wouldn't consider one or an R8 for that matter if I had the money, but in a way it was a relief getting back into the Z4 3.0si because the acceleration in the 911 was both addictive and frightening in terms of licence busting

Yep, it's exactly that...the acceleration, the noise, the pops and bangs from the exhaust are addictive...you keep gunning it to keep getting that aural hit!

What amazes me the most is the change from the R8 of a few years ago to recent. I drove an earlier one around the track next to a GTR and an Aventador. Very underwhelmed. Drove a V10 last month and it's such a special place to be!

Surely the Z4M also gets to the speed limit before the revs run out in 2nd
I do like them, but don’t think the extra cash is worth it, as I’ve never been overtaken by an R8 (V8 or V10) on track yet although have overtaken a couple and had an entertaining 1.5 lap tussle with a caged one at the Ring a few years back.
Although to be fair, I’d also be slower driving a £90k car around the Ring than I am in my leggy MC

My brother had the V10 R8 and I was blown away how quick it was, he now has a McLaren 570S Coupé (younger brother with his own business ) which is just mental, I prefer the Audi's build though and it felt so planted.
Amazed how easy it is to pinch your fingers in the door when shutting it on the McLaren

The new V10 is indeed suitably quick. Unlike the the original V8, which though no slouch, is no quicker than a Z4M of a similar age.

Come to the Dark Side! 90k gets you a V12 Vantage, manual box as standard! Just get one with all the carbon trim and it'l not depreciate.Angelus666 wrote: ↑Sun May 13, 2018 4:54 pm So, looking to replace the missus TT and we're in a fortunate position to buy something interesting. Totally agree with jimmybell,
Go for the Aston Vantage V12, although it would not be as fast as the R8 or 911 etc. BUT it does have an Aura about it. The Aston would let you walk away, then after a few steps you would turn around and have another look and smile!
Also it would pass the "T" junction test, people would let you out when the traffic is heavy, but what about the poor old R8 or 911 sat at the junction.
Or is it me dreaming.

Haven't had a newer aston but deffo agree with that. Didn't have a v12 but the Vantage literally had kids taking photos in the street and I couldn't stop grinning. Special cars

Lots of options in that price range,id look at overall depreciation over time, but as said the Aston mmm.
I used my bosses V8 Vantage Volante for a weekend and even though it was the sports shift....like SMG and a t**t to get used to...I felt like James Bond. Still not as many looks as the day I had in his 458 Spider mind.

Launch mode in the V10 gave me a headache in the end. The world seemed to bend around you each time!
I loved the back window that you can drop to enjoy the sound even when it's raining (Spider).
I was achieving 9MPG on a spirited trip around the A & B roads of rural Hants!

Sorry, but I tried them before my decision and they weren’t really special. A big TT and for sure quick, but no theatre like you get in Astons, Fezzas, 911, (and of course for me Jags)
