What else would you get?

Post by derin100 » Fri Jan 26, 2018 8:19 pm

Kind of day dreaming but...

Today I was thinking: "What would I get instead of my Z4MR?" and decided to explore the idea of a 997 Gen II Carrera. I had a brief browse in the PH Classifieds and just as an example...

A 2010 3.6 Carrera with 54K miles is around £40k and has 345 bhp. So that's roughly the same as my Z4M, has more miles on it and would cost me roughly £25K more! :(

I'm struggling to reconcile that £25K extra. Is there a coherent argument that can be put forward to justify it?

It's difficult to justify. Yes the 997 is a better car but it ain't more than twice as good. It's the dilemma a lot of zed owners face, where do you go from here without breaking the bank

Never understood 911's. Nice cars but no more than many others, so why people pay a premium is beyond me. Decent engineering and heritage, made full use of by the marketing dept I guess. :tumbleweed:

A lot on here seem to like 911s!

But for me the real appeal of the Z4 is having the engine at the front, drive from the rear and a manual gearbox - which only seems to leave an F-Type as a possible option! Or maybe a Supra when they come out (I like a roof).
Coupes because stunning!

The extra £25k is because of this :-

F-Type is an interesting alternative shout indeed!

Yes, I can't help thinking that too.

Also, what a bargain Z4Ms really are at the moment!

I was just visiting a friend of mine yesterday who has just taken delivery of his brand new 911 Turbo S. (That's what got me thinking).

A beautiful car...but £156K! :o

F-type is heavy but a lovely car to drive apparently. The Supra won't have a manual gearbox from what I could see, if the FT-1 prototype was anything to go by.

I was looking for a 991 C2S, when I came across my Cayman with 7.5k miles on it, £20k less and 90% if not more of the car.

I must admit, I have fallen in love with the Cayman but even this hasn't allowed me to let the M go. Different cars and although there is a substantial difference in value, there is also 7 years between the two cars and it shows. The interior of the Cayman is so much more modern but the M feels "old school" and that has its appeal.

I think you will struggle to beat an M for value for money but sometimes, if you can afford it, you should try others. I did 9 years in Toyota Supras and boy to I regret not moving on earlier.

Hmmm...Two very good shouts there for the Vantage and the Cayman. :)

Have to agree with your sentiments here. My heart told me to buy a Mazarati Spider, or a Tuscan, when I bought the MR. Fortunately my head makes the decisions.

I think the 80/20 approach applies pretty well to cars!

My 325ti cost about 20% of what I paid for my Z4C, but it delivers about 80% of the fun! Despite that I'm happy paying the premium for the extra performance my Z4C delivers.

But my Z4C is probably worth about 50% of what an MC would cost, and at that point I start to struggle - would an M really deliver twice the fun? But maybe I am being limited by my budget.

Yes, I think in terms of Bang for Bucks a 3.0Si is actually quite difficult to beat.

And, I think I've shelved the 997 notion now...possibly permanently after reading some of the other suggestions.

I think many 7-10yr old 911s are for sale a long time & very much like ZMs have held & even risen in values the last few years , i know when i was looking at gen1 997s 3-4 years ago they bottomed out around £18k /£20k . That would get you a 05 plate 85k C2 C2s but now you would need to pay 25-30% more for the same year cars .
As for 997 gen2s at £40k for a 50k 10 plate with 345bhp  just makes my 10 plate 50k 35i a performance car bargain circa £15k :driving:
3 ZMRs
3 E89s
5 Si coupes
5 Si roadsters

Only thing I'd really consider to replace my Z4mR would be a Lotus Elise, similar to this:

Current: Imola Red 400bhp 640d & Ocean Blue BMW S1000XR Sport SE
Past: Silver Grey Z4MR, Silver Grey Z4C & Titan Silver Z4 3.0i
