What 'station' car for £4-5k...?

Post by Angelus666 » Mon Jan 08, 2018 4:24 pm

Need a bit of inspiration...I need to buy a station/work car for about £4-5k...it needs to fit into the business criteria of under 8 years old (so 2011 onwards)...and ideally an automatic (so the missus can drive it). I will only do 4k miles a year in it, so have been thinking of a high miler VW golf or Polo. Any other ideas?

with such low annual miles forget any diesel post 2011 as it'll have a DPF and more than likely will get clogged up

Yeah , a 1.4 polo 6R sounds good

how about a skoda Fabia VRS dsg if they can fit in your budget...might get a higher miler one

Honda Jazz, I've only ever seen older ladies driving them....guess that means they won't be thrashed to sh*t. Also thinking about taking a look at a Ford Fiesta or Renault Clio....seems crazy to think I could get a 3.0 Z4 for the same money as a shitbox... :|

A Fiesta 1.6 TDCI will cost you 0 road tax and give 60+ MPG. We had a Jazz (also known as the Honda Fit abroad) and it gave us no problems for over 3 years of ownership. :)

Another recommendation for the Honda Jazz - with a couple of caveats.
It's a great car, a lot more spacious than it looks, very reliable, economical and well designed, built in the UK.
My only criticsms would be:
Parts are relatively expensive - not that it's a major problem because it's so well built and reliable.
The interior is a bit plasticy, not as nice as a Fiesta or a Mini.
It's a pensioners car - no-one will let you out, if you're on a narrow road, people assume you'll give way. A bit like driving a Nissan Note - which is a very similar car.
Had one for 18 months - not a moments trouble - but it was a bit dull.
Cheers, Dave

Fiesta diesel is an abomination of a motor. They are NOT good on fuel at all. I had for a year as a pool car. Never got more than 47mpg out of it and it's painfully weak and feels like it'll roll over on a corner. Proper sloppy.

Seriously though. Why not just buy a 120/25/30i? Or a mk1 S3? Still cool to roll about it, bullet proof lumps and still relatively good on fuel. Plus when the Z breaks you've got a decent motor to go hoon about in.
MR-2 Turbo Rev2

Yep no Z yet. On the hunt.

What about a new Seat Arona DSG for £150 a month plus vat? Lease on a 6+23 8000 miles a year (that's 6 payments in advance deposit).

We have one, had it 3 years and it returns 65 mpg all day long, handles fine for a 4 door hatchback, comfy too. You must have had a pup

When buying the ex her new car it was a Jazz or a toyota Yaris as the choice . After I tested both she ended up with the Yaris auto on the drive . The honda although nice enough just felt less secure than the Yaris . I posted the keys through the door and got a taxi home , she likes it so it's all good , quiet life for a while .

On the same drive we had a ZS125 and my ST. It's the worst of all fiestas. Was a titx as well with all the goodies. Just pure s**t compared to the others.

+1 , my ex had a tdci fiesta 10 plate, I don't know what your expecting for a diesel shopping trolley - they drive well and was nippy/frugal - no worse or better than any other diesel supermini ive driven

Take a look at the Mazda3. Basically a Focus in a Japanese suit. I love them.
