Touch up paint and Gtechniq PW react strangely

Post by DMike » Sun Apr 05, 2020 6:10 pm

Sharing this experience just in case someone is about give Gtechniq ceramics a go: Gtechniq panel wipe can react strangely with touch up paint.

Preparing for the ceramics I had touched up quite a number of paint chips in the front bumper, using oem Sterling grey touch up paint. Most chips were tiny so no need nor space for clear coat. Waited a couple of weeks and finalised the touch ups - just a a go with polish and they went invisible as usual. Cleaning the paint from polish residues with Gtechnics panel wipe resulted, however, in a strange reaction where the touch ups turned really bright silver. The bright surface could be removed with heavy polishing. Wiped with diluted IPA and appied CSL & EXO ceramics with no hassle. Happy end but I missed a heartbeat or two.

Earlier on my blue 6er’s touch ups (also with oem paint and PW) did not react this way.

I am gtechniq accredited....

Their panel wipe is too strong to use over bare stone chip repairs, use a water based PW such as car pro ERASER.

Good to know. CSL & EXO works really nice with this colour. So far I’ve only rinsed any dirt away and take a short blast on the motorway to dry.
