What Pads, Compound, Wax and Extra's- Z4 Coupe Ruby Black?

Post by mgrlane » Fri Nov 29, 2019 10:25 am

Morning Ladies and Gents,

Starting to get a little into the detailing side of things and I am about to pull the trigger on a DAS-6 PRO.

The research I have done so far (hours on youtube and this forum) is I need the following:
-Clay Bar
-IPA
-DA Polisher
-Compound + Pad (5inch and 3 Inch)
-Polish + Pad (5inch and 3 Inch)

Questions and Items I might need:
-Addition buffing cloth (I have loads of microfiber clothes- will they do?)
-Something to protect the pain after cutting and polishing?
-What are the recommendations for compounds and pads? I read on here that the top coat is rather strong and will need alot of passes?

Any advice for a newbie would greatly be appreciated.

Mike

I’d suggest micro fibre pads are the way to go. If you’re new then the scholl 20 is a good all in one product. If you like to clean and polish regularly then go for a sealant then a nice carnuba way. If you clean once a month then maybe go with a ceramic coating,

I use as DAS6 pro with meguires mf pads.
I also use their cutting compound as they are designed to compliment each other.

Once cut, I use Megs ultimate polish, followed by Finish Kare 1000p sealant.

Each stage buffed with a fresh MF cloth.

I find the paint very difficult to correct so the polish helps by filling in minor swirls.

I bought all of my stuff from CLEAN MY CAR.

I got a bit giddy in the end and bought the following in a "pack"

1 x DAS-6 PRO Dual Action car Polisher
1 x Meguiars #105 Ultra Cut Compound 8oz
1 x Meguiars #205 Ultra Finishing Polish 8oz
1 x Chemical Guys Orange 5.5" Hex Logic Pad
1 x Chemical Guys White 5.5" Hex Logic Pad

Then I got the following:
SHINEMATE 3.5" DUAL-ACTION BACKING PLATE
CHEMICAL GUYS - ORANGE 4" HEX-LOGIC PAD
CHEMICAL GUYS - WHITE 4" HEX-LOGIC PAD
LAKE COUNTRY - SNAPPY PAD CLEANERS
CARPRO ERASER - INTENSE OIL AND POLISH CLEANSE
VALET PRO - INCH ROUND WHEEL BRUSH
VALET PRO - BLUE HEAVY CLAY

By the looks of things I need to get a tar and fallout remover and something else such as Maguire's wash plus (or equivalent- need to research more) and I think I am good to go for some cutting and polishing.

I also bought some Meg's Ultimate wax to finish everything off.

If I have forgotten anything then please do say

Yes. I'm pleased but there are some bonnet scratches I can't correct.

I'm a bit of a perfectionist so I'm never truly happy.

I detailed my Arteon with the same kit and procedure.

The microfibre pads are a lot better than the foam ones and I’d think about changing what you have over.

The paint on these Z's is so hard that you'll need a good 4 or 5 days to do a full correction (as a beginner) with foam pads. The microfibre will cut that down to 1 to 2 days.

Can't comment on the pads etc but if you're looking for clay bar stuff... Having tried the actual clay and then this clay mitt, the mitt is a 100% easier.

Yep you were right- I should have took your advice. I did just a polish in the end and the foam pads made very hard work of the car.

Live and learn, the foam pads do help you practice with very little chance of making a mistake and I think they are probably better on softer paint (porsche).
