Touch-up paint - minefield!

Post by WBB » Fri Aug 31, 2018 1:40 pm

Hi all, i'm just after some recommendations for touch-up paint, Titan Silver 354 in my case, it's just for tiny chips in the paintwork.

I've had a look all over the place, and prices vary from just £5 up to around £20 for a can, or up to £20 or £30 for kits. Presuming the colour will be the same regardless of expense, am i foolish to splash out loads or foolish to go for a cheaper option... it's a minefield out there!

I've no experience in what the best make of paint might be, if someone could point me in the right direction - much appreciated.

Personally i bought a proper touch up pen from bmw, good colour match, don't start spraying anything with a can unless you know exactly what you are doing. As for the touch up pen if you have a chip put 2 or 3 little dabs on it with 30 mins in between until the chip is the same level as the surrounding paint. Then leave it for a few days to harden fully and lightly blend it in with t cut. I have done a couple on mine and unless I pointed them out you would be hard pressed to spot.

Lots of recommendations for paints4u on the detailingworld forum who I would probably put most faith in. Ive got some in the garage but not used it as of yet so i cant say for sure but detailing people seem to say they are a great match.

Bit more expensive than the ebay/halfords ones which could be anything from close to turning your car into polka dot.

Also has clearcoat mixed in unless you specifically buy the kit that comes with separate lacquer

Where can I get Alpina Blue touchup paint? Is this more difficult to sort out than normal paint colours (direction of paint etc.)?

Paints4u look good, but £8 for delivery of a £12 paint is a bit steep!
