Orange Peel??

Post by Bluecat » Mon Jul 23, 2018 4:02 pm

So eventually got the menzerna super heavy cut and a flexpad denim pad. The results as below, hard to tell whether its actually improved the orange peel or just made it shinier!. Its hard to show it in a photo but the below does catch some of the problem, should i just suck it up or get it wet sanded, and if so by who and an idea of cost would be very helpful[img]

really tricky one...honestly, in my view for a £5k Z4 you have to ask is it really worth spending £1k to 100% perfect the paint. The car looks amazing from what I can see, is that not enough?

check the depth of the paint first before anything. You've tried to cut it twice now with denim pads and course polish. I would not want to put 2000 grade wet & dry on that without a measure of the clearcoat.
Unless of course you are willing to spend on getting it painted when it all goes wrong.

As someone has already said the orange peel will be the lacquer. You need a block and 2000 w n d. A machine polish with a cutting compound will sort that out. Perhaps you need to get someone that knows what they are doing.

If there's any clear left after all that polishing.

Well its a 10k car :D but would have though colour sanding a bonnet would be at most a days work. Agreed re the depth of paint but surely if a bonnet has been repainted its unlikely to be a bare metal respray so there could be 2 lots of basecoat then clear coat on it so it would be still easy to go through the clear coat. Lynchy can I pm you re this??

Orange Peel??

Ok After much pondering ordered some 1500 and 3000 grit Trzact discs with a soft foam insert to go on the DA. It is possible to wet sand with a DA but you have to just use a water spray mister on the pad and a couple of squirts on the panel. Below are the attempts so far with 1500 grit doing quarter of the bonnet a time. I know have half a matt bonnet, will press on with the rest tomorrow then 3000 grit. Then the final stages are compound and then polish. If I dont post any more photos its all gone horribly wrong :? NB the first photo is the last, not got the hang of posting pictures very well yet. The third and fourth photo show the extent of the orange peel.

The bonnet looks to have been blown over at some point, there are not that many stone chips, and the orange peel is pretty much all over the bonnet. Having said that bmw paint quality is not good, my neighbours 2017 x3 has similar orange peel, so it possibly could be the original but doubtful. I thought if you leaned hard on a DA it slowed down so surely it must polish it less? Dont want to go through the clearcoat but attempts so far have not yielded much change.

Whereabouts are you pal. I will help out if not too far.
