Interesting to be driven in someone else's Z4

I popped down to Durham Dave to get a new HPFP fitted this week.

Whilst I was waiting, Mike Cherryman was kind enough to pick me and we went round the North Pennines and further south for a drive and to explore further some ideas for a late October Sunday run.

Mike has a 23i on 18" run flats with over 100k miles on it.

It was an interesting experience being driven around for a whole day by a Zed driver in another Zed..

My thoughts in no great order were:

There's much more common with all E89s than their differences.

The car (SE) rode well on its 18" runflats (Potenzas)

Nice sound from the exhaust.

Very tight /rattle free cabin (closing my eyes I would say felt like a 20k mile cabin)

Handling as perceived by a pax was good.dampers felt a bit tired under compression shocks but little wallowing for the mileage.

Seats although SE I found were comfortable for me.

Mike had speed warnings on his GPS..it was interesting that it felt and sounded like we were going quite fast, but the speed warnings showed we were moving at a more modest pace (still kept up with two AM DB9s)

Next time I'll do a bit of a drive and hopefully vice versa..

Not many pictures..I forgot..

Nice one of Mike!

Is Durham Dave an Indy for BMW's or just for roof issues?

I have a good Indy near to me but it never does any harm to have another just in case mine is busy and I need something doing.

He, his son and another chap are general purpose car mechanics..most of their customers from my two visits are common car and van models..they are not as far as I can see focussed on Z4s or even BMWs.

For the older engined cars. N52/N54 I would imagine they can do most tasks..they don’t have the BMW s/w tool sets nor some of the special tools for the later engines..although they may entertain that..

Price wise they are very competitive…

Hope that’s a fair overview…

Really interesting roads look fantastic as well!

Its striking how your perception of speed changes from being in the passenger and drivers seat.

I wouldn't say my 2.5 feels slow (even if it is by modern standards), but I'm very much used to the acceleration, passengers often say how fast the car feels at 50/60mph - not sure if its being in a low slung sports car on fairly hard suspension with a I6 and 19" wheels that creates this perception? Especially when compared to say a hatchback focus/corsa etc. with a small turbo charged engine.

I guess it’s a good thing that you feel you are going fast when you are not…safety feature..

Low sat position plus top down equals feeling of pace.

As I said I was impressed with the bank per buck of the 23i a lot of car for not a lot of money..

I’ll try and blag a few more co-pilot rides and see how they check out..

Yes some of the off-piste roads we were on were great… :driving:
