North Devon!

Hi Guys n Gals,

I’m off to North Devon from Surrey/Hants area on Friday with the wife and her family for a week and have decided to take the Zed down as well rather than all 5 of us cram into her F45 and thought I’d ask for some recommendations on must visits in the car - will be the first proper trip since getting her in June (with exception to a couple of runs down to the south coast).

We’re off to Braunton between Barnstaple and Croyde, so expect some nice surrounds generally and will no doubt take a trip into Dartmoor at some point as were popping to Badgers Holt but;

Where else is in the must do list?

This time of year most of the roads in North Devon will be a joy to drive out side of rush hour. Bring your surf board your waking boots and your climbing rack for the perfect week. No idea on pubs or eating out not been near either since Covid hit and all the happier and richer for it. :D

One of my long time surfing stamping grounds... :D

Puttsborough just around the corner from Croyde is a very nice beach with a cliff top car park. You can walk to Woolacombe on the beach so it’s a nice couple of hours stroll.

Saunton sands has really nice right hand wave off the right hand cliffs and a huge beach.

Lynton and Lynmouth are worth a visit further round and you get to go up Porlock hill, that’s a giggle especially if the farmer is moving sheep on the road...

Avoid Westward Ho! No offence to any locals but a bit of a crap hole....

Enjoy....very jealous..!

Pic of me dropping into a big pre winter swell off Puttsborough last weekend.... :P

Sixty miles or so down the coast and over the border into Cornwall will bring you to Tintagel Castle and a few miles further along to picturesque Port Isaac. The scenery, sea cliffs and possible site of King Arthurs Camelot at Tintagel combine to make a very memorable half day out. Then roll on down to Port Isaac (ITV Doc Martins 'Port Wenn') for pasties, crab sandwiches and Cornish Ice Cream. Take a ride on the PISS Bus (see photo :D )back up the steep hill to the car park afterwards.
A great day out. In the Z4 with the roof down....even better !

My sister had a few days off work a couple of weeks ago and wanted to go to North Devon, but wasn't sure she wanted to go on her own, so seeing as I haven't been anywhere this year I said I'd go with her.

We stayed a few nights in Ilfracombe where there is a great harbour that has a terrific fish restaurant called Smugglers.

Bideford was quite pleasant to mooch around, but why are there so many 2nd hand furniture shops? Maybe people furnishing holiday lets keep them going?

Anyway I had decided I wanted to visit Appledore, but there wasn't much there so we went to Westward Ho - and we liked it!

Visited Lynton and Lynmouth before we came home - they are pretty, but were very busy. And Lynton is very hilly if that might be an issue for anyone in your group.

Sadly I took the 3 Series as I knew she wouldn't enjoy the Z4, and still managed to get a few disapproving comments in that - she doesn't share my need for speed!

But overall North Devon was well worth a visit.
Coupes because stunning!
Current - Silver Grey MC, Imola Red heated Nappa & carbon trim. Aeros, H & R Coil-overs, 224s, OE Strut brace, Nav, cup-holders, DSP Hi-Fi, pdc, cruise, MFSW, no CDV! E90 330i daily
Gone - Montego Blue
Gone - Ruby Black

If you are a National trust member then Arlington Court is a good way to spend a wet day, lovely house and the National carriage museum. Horse drawn carriages are not normally my thing but the history of them including a retired Royal coach was interesting. A walk up to Watersmeet through the valley from Lynmouth is very pleasant.
No visit to Ilfracombe would be complete with out a look at the thought provoking “ Verity “ on the harbour, huge Damien Hurst ( local lad ) sculpture. From memory around 80 feet tall.

Haha I am wholly expecting it to be grey and overcast sadly. Here’s hoping for a few breaks to get the top down!
