An idea for an epic road trip

I think a few of us have done it...a few times in fact!

NC500 for short

For example...
Trigger’s Z4MC
Some bits now over 163,000 miles, some less than 1,000 miles.
Individual Ruby Black, Individual extended champagne leather, plus many options

An idea for an epic road trip

Post by ColinBR » Sat Jul 25, 2020 2:10 pm

I'm just back from from a mini tour up the west coast and onto Skye on the bike. We try to do it every other year.

I'd say its a better route than the NC500, unless you haven't done the NC500 before. If not then do it to say you've done it.

Basically we head up past Loch Lomond to Inveraray, then to Loch Gilphead and up to Oban for lunch. From there its up to Fort William, Invergarry and across to Kyle of Lochalsh stopping off at the Castle for a quick pic, and on to Skye for a night.

On the way back we take a different route home and come down through Glencoe.

Once I get a Z4 coupe its the first trip I'll be taking with the wife, as she loves it up there.

You must’ve passed my front door :D I’m in Lochgilphead.

Inveraray to Lochgilphead then on to Oban is a fantastic drive, especially if the roads are quite :driving:

Here’s a picture of my Zed in the spot you must’ve been standing in to take your first picture

No doubt about passing your place then. Stunning part of the country you are in. I'm more towards the Borders and love the run up through

Yes it is. My house is on the main road to Oban just as you leave the town.

A lot of people either swing north to Oban at Tarbet or Inveraray and miss out the Lochgilphead loop (one of the best bits IMO) I would highly recommend heading to Campbeltown when you reach Lochgilphead and doing the Kintyre peninsula, about 50 miles each way, then back up to Lochgilphead then onto Oban. Worth the extra half day for the drive if you have the time

Did the full NC500 a few years back, though didnt think that much of the loop back from john o groats to inverness, so this september just gone i just did the west coast and isle of skye with my dad.

2 nights on Skye, 2 in Ullapool, then 1 more on Skye. Such spectacular scenery, and stunning roads. I think the A894 north of Kylesku bridge is my favourite bit of road in the world!

Frankly amazing that scenery like that exists on the same bit of land that coventry does, and is just a 6hr drive away!

Good call by Brillomaster; the Inverness to J o'G section is dull, dull, dull. When we did the NC500, June 2016, we had anticipated that (and I had driven part of that road many years ago en route to Thurso GC) and did that section first, missing out J o'G, instead taking in Duncansby Head.

Yea I'll add that in next time.
Think I've been that way before when fishing in my younger days. Only a couple of hours added when on a bike.
