Top 10 Uk roads to drive ( not mine )

Post by mr wilks » Thu Oct 11, 2018 5:58 pm

Some good suggestions here for those looking to get out & about in the Uk roadtripping :driving:
Ive covered a good number of the 10 & No2 would be my No1 uk stretch of tarmac but then i haven't covered the winning Somerset route .
The Black Mountain one through Brecon Beacons looks like one for my " to drive" list .
No9 is breathtaking at the top but i wouldnt do it again in my own car , its mechanically brutal
No5 is just a must & one for the memorybank as you cross Rannoch Moor
.
None of my favourite Lancashire / Yorkshire roads included so should ensure they remain quiet for me

No. 6 seems a bit out of place, quite literally as it’s Berkshire, not Buckinghamshire 😉
I’ve driven it a few times but it’s nothing special. I guess it’s just for the view down The Long Walk to Windsor Castle.

No10 is also a non starter , its average speed cameras spread over the 8 mile stretch kill off any possible enjoyment that the way too busy with traffic hasn't already
Can't see any reason at all why that would be on the list

Done 5 out of 10 of those. :driving: :D As always a good road depends on so much more that just the way the tarmac flows. Having driven Glencoe a few times including at 5am in perfect weather. I would have to say, it is good but not near a top ten of Scottish roads, let alone UK.

Always fun to debate such polls though. So I look forward to this thread growing over the next few days.

Glencoe wasnt about the drive for me ( done very early id say the road down from Lochness along Lock Lomond is better ) , same with the road past Snowdon to Llanberis over the pass , its more about the scenery & surroundings , even the road over Glenshee can't be done at full chatt with the police patrols so if its full on drive pleasure where you bottle before the car does you need to leave the Uk & try Normandy , licence stays safe , sublime tarmac ,undulating picturesque scenery fast flowing bends , car & congestion free  its a must for any petrolhead :driving:

Completely agree with this. I drove the Lomond road the same morning, met one guy driving the doors off a transit, who let me past once he noticed I was there. Brilliant road, even allowing for the cr#p surface in a few places.

If you do it once, you will be back. If I am up that way and have time, I make a point of driving that road. That has to be a sure sign of a decent road in my book. :driving:

The B4391 'Migneint' running west into Ffestiniog is 8 miles of pure driving nirvana. Running east is almost as good. You could literally spend all day driving back and forth :driving:

There’s some hidden gems, done a number of these, believe the time of day (early when sun is rising on a dry day & little traffic) play a large part.

Road to Bala (N Wales), Brecons as above & the 70 miles along the A831 from Loch Ness out to Skye/Flodigarry are firm favourites...

So many, so little time
