I think it was about 55mm off the top of my head.
I made the hole deeper so it stops on the bulbous part of the gear leaver and added in a 30deg angle 6mm deep to hit a it all.

Thanks for that. So how short could the knob be made? Allow 5mm of material above the shaft? So around 60-65mm?

They are only 77mm now but I guess about 3mm bigger than the depth of the hole. If you take your gear knob off and measure to the shoulder then add 3mm
