My new 2009 Z4C

Post by BenM » Mon Sep 13, 2021 7:13 pm

Hi all
I've been lurking on here for a few months while I looked for an E86 - now I have one so thought I should introduce myself. Or rather my car. It's a late one, registered in March 2009, on 52k miles. It's a fairly basic spec, it has heated seats but not much else - but I bought based on condition, it's a really clean one.
So far I've had a full fluid and filter change done, including coolant, brakes, gearbox and diff. I had the coolant expansion tank and thermostat done at the same time. There's an engine light on which is an O2 sensor fault code - so it'll probaby need a post-cat sensor at some point soon. It's got a cracked rear spring, no great surprise expcept they were already done at 34k miles - although that was in 2013. I had the front ARB bushes and drop links done already, I might take the opportunity to do the springs and dampers all round as well as any other bushes and consumables whilst it's in.
Future plans include a stereo upgrade - it has the basic system, I've added a Grom BT3 but it doesn't sound great. No sure if I got lucky but I found the CD changer cables just by taking out the passenger side cubby box befind the seat - glad I didn't have to take most of the boot trim out to find them. If the weather holds I'll do a paint correction and polish some time soon. I also want to do a cruise control retrofit so I'll probably be bothering srhutch for a loom at some point.
I'm really enjoying the car so far. I came from VWs, I've had several Mk1 GTIs plus a Corrado VR6 that I still miss - but BMW ownership is just as good.

Basic spec - pah! You have M sport heated seats and cupholders, what more do you want?
Welcome to coupe ownership.

Good job finding such a low mileage example, mine had 140k on it when I bought it!

Thanks for the comments. Yes, the Style 108s are (were) in great condition - refurbed recently with properly diamond cut rims, and they look great - until I ruined the NS front wheel on a kerb last week!

Hi and welcome to the forum from an E86 addict!

You've found a really late model with low miles - lovely! And it looks like you also have the optional rear parking sensors.

Good news finding the CD-changer cables, but they were all pre-wired for it.

You mention a fault code for an O2 sensor. Do you know if the car has sat around and/or been jump-started, or if the battery is on it's last legs?
Only my 2nd Coupe had an Amber EML come on for post-cat O2 sensors on both banks. My Indy cleared them and gave it a dose of Cataclean but a couple of months later it returned. I booked it in for another diagnosis but the battery died while he was running the diagnostics.

New battery, codes cleared and all sorted.

BMWs seem to throw up random warning lights when the battery is dying (my MC did the same last year) so I'd check the battery, clear the codes and cross my fingers!

Hope you get it sorted anyway.
Coupes because stunning!
Current - Silver Grey MC, Imola Red heated Nappa & carbon trim. Aeros, H & R Coil-overs, 224s, OE Strut brace, Nav, cup-holders, DSP Hi-Fi, pdc, cruise, MFSW, no CDV! E90 330i daily
Gone - Montego Blue

Hi Mr Tidy
Yes, I was aware that all the cars are pre-wired for the CD changer - but I was expecting to have to remove most of the boot trim. It was a very pleasant surprice to find them just sitting there.

The battery is fairly new. The car has been sat around for a while, but the fault seems to be permanent - I've cleared it several times and it always returns. The code is 002C9E - heating circuit on lambda probe. I believe it's one of the post-cat sensors. Still a chance it's wiring but most likely needs a new sensor. The MOT is due shortly so I'll hopefully get it sorted when it's in the garage for that. Cheers for the advice though.
