I think you may well have pressed the button without realising.
The OBC screen on my E90 has 4 displays, average MPH, average MPG, fuel range and a blank one! But then time and outside temperature are pemanently displayed above that screen.
My E86 doesn't have a blank screen in the OBC, but you need to scroll through the options to get the time or outside temperature.
E89s being newer than E85/86s may well have more in common with my E90, but hopefully someone with an E89 can confirm. Failing that go out and try it tomorrow!

Time and temp above.

So it’s definitely a case of fat finger syndrome & being over sensitive with indicating in the new car!
Another question … sorry!
I live under a couple of trees & assume that the roof needs to be completely clear of leaves to retract properly?
What do people recommend?
I assume a brush (as in dustpan and) with really soft bristles?
Thanks for your help so far guys

The display will also flash up with miles remaining when you get low on fuel, I think at 60 and 30 miles remaining, so it could have just been that.
Worth mentioning that my manual warns against letting fuel regularly go below 30 miles remaining as it may cause damage (can't remember the exact wording). But, that may be engine specific because the 35i/35iS with the N54 engine are well known for fuel pump failures.
I would be very careful using a brush on the bodywork, I'd want something as soft as a paint brush. To be honest I would probably just use my hands.

I think the paintbrush is an excellent suggestion
