Bike Rack for BMW Z4

Post by Kaeoni » Mon Oct 28, 2019 1:34 pm

Everyone tends to say get a roof rack. Obviously this isn't an option for me. Is there a such thing as a decent bike rack for a Z4?

I use a Saris bones single bike carrier

I only carry my frame in the rack as it is a velodrome bike with deep section wheels which are removed and fit in the boot

When I tried fitting the rack it does just touch the edge of the boot so I made some soft foam pads 10mm to lift and push the rack out a bit and also put a soft cloth on the boot paintwork as a precaution and the bike frame is solid even at motorway plus speeds with a few extra nylon straps (toe clip straps) I also remove one pedal as it is close to the bumper

I think I may have picture on my laptop if needed my car is now wrapped up for winter and rod bearings etc.

Not really the best car for bike carrying but I've seen this advertised before..

but I get mine in the boot provided you can leave it open slightly - I strap it down and pad the frame, but it does look like its eaten a cyclist from behind! :D

the saris don't seem very good, you seem to have lost half your bike.. :D
If you ever think I'm off my rocker.. Just put me back in it and walk away... It's the kindest thing

You obviously know better as its your bike rack but it almost looks like it is fitted upside down and the part that the bike sits on should curl upwards rather than downwards.

You can change position of the 3 spar sets depending on the shape of your car of course. Top photo is with the racing bike frame with the carrier spars rotated to sit a bit lower. Maybe a bit more aero/fuel efficient that way and doesnt obscure the lights or numberplate. Wheels are in the boot.

Bottom photo (parked at the end of the back drive Rutger Hauers’ house (namedrop lol) has the mtb frame mounted and spars are rotated to sit a bit higher. Wheels in boot again.

I’d recommend the bones out of all the bike racks as for me it’s proven itself over almost 3 years as a good-functioning product, also with 2 bikes mounted.

The only mod required is to tie-wrap the locking frame loops as they are friction fit and can slide off their carriers when you’re subjecting them to high loads, going around bends fast etc.
After that it’s rock steady.
