The negatives to a Z4

Post by seattlebrian » Sat Sep 07, 2019 2:50 am

I'm seriously considering purchasing a new Z4. Down payment is sitting in a savings account just waiting to be used.

BUT...

What are the negatives to the car? What are some of the quirks that annoy you? Are oil changes insanely expensive? Basically, after the honeymoon is over (after you bought your Z4) what are the annoyances you've noticed?

If all the annoyances/quirks listed are not sudden instant deal breakers for me, I'd love to hop onto the bandwagon!

Thanks for your help!

Welcome to the forum. :) Which Z4 are you thinking of buying? G29, E89, E86 or E85?

What are you buying the car for. Daily driver, weekend toy?

Hi, the biggest and most obvious negative is the fact it’s a 2 seater-if that’s not an issue then the car shouldn’t disappoint.
It’s not in the exotic car league and I’ve always found running costs to be reasonable

I'm not sure if the op was on about a NEW one as in a G29 with them saying a new z4 :idunno:

No real negatives apart from only having 2 seats, no more costly to run than any other car, servicing slightly more as you have an extra 2 cylinders, buy on condition with history and you won't go far wrong.

Standard seats are uncomfortable if you can get an Si with sport seats or swap out seats for e46 sport seats budget around £200 if you do the swap yourself.

Don't expect great fuel consumption as the Z4 likes being driven. I have a 2.5 automatic.

Other than that its one of the best cars I have owned. Smile everytime I get in and always look back when I walk away.

Biggest negative to Z ownership in my experience by far is that it's an idiot-magnet.

I experience no end of aggression and bad manners over here in The Netherlands.
UK, Poland, Germany, Switzerland all fine mostly but as soon as I cross the border back into Holland it's just an idiot freeforall!

It seems to be worse when I have my bike hooked onto the boot for some reason.

Don't drive it in or through Holland.

Depends on how you classify negatives.
Reliability is good but the e85/e86 is 10-16 years old so expect the normal wear and tear.
MPG you forget about because the car is worth driving. Saying that, for the performance it’s actually really good.

Jealousy. Occasionally you get idiots who are jealous and then call you names. They are the type who don’t know about cars!

The boot on the e85 is reasonable. I’ve had my folding bike in it on many occasions.

Comfort. It’s not a GT car and can get tiring over long distances.

I’ve had mine for 6 years now and still love it. Buy one, experience it and make your own mind.
As with any car that you cherish, fear of it getting damaged in car parks, on the road etc.
3.0si roadster. Requisite stubby. Sound gen mod. LED numberplate lights. LED boot strip. Interior lights LED too. ZHP gearknob. Daily drive :driving:
Motor in boot. Bilstein B8 dampers. New radio, much better sounds

Ha ha! Mine calls the Z 'The Carrot'.
But I only wanted a VO one, so I guess I have to put up with it.

At least the grand-kids call it the 'Racing Carrot' :)

I’ve loved Zed ownership, still look back at her after I’ve parked her ( at the furthest part of any car park ) and still puts a big smile on my face when I return to her. I have found that people love to cut me up and getting let out at junctions is a problem too. Awesome cars all variations just buy one
