Adding a Z4 Coupe to the collection

Post by johndglynn » Sun Jul 14, 2019 8:02 pm

Hi all, thought I would say hello and a big thanks to all those who have contributed so much great information on the Z4 Coupe to the board. I have been following the market for a while and digging into the ownership experience ahead of adding a hatchback to my collection later this year, so the information on this board has been very handy.

My background is motor trade with valuations as a specialist subject and obviously there is a lot going on in the sluggish market right now. I like working on my own cars and have a small fleet of older cars and bikes. I have owned a lot of BMWs and currently own a '95 E36 M3 - the last RHD 3-litre saloon - and nine or ten old oilheads. The Z4 would be a part-timer for me: bit of a tourer, the odd countryside school run and dad's taxi but mainly a few road trips a year.

Anyway, thanks again to the contributors. Looking forward to learning more and sharing the story of whatever I end up with

Not quite in grey Hush Puppies territory yet and have an old SL500 waiting for when that day comes...

Hi and welcome to the forum.

You might need to travel a bit even to find one a manual one with heated M-Sport seats that isn't silver - the UK only got about 3,000 3.0Si Coupes of all models. That number includes SE models that don't have the seats I think you want, autos and silver ones! And heated seats were on the options list.

Still, a Sport Coupe is a great choice obviously - good luck with your search.
Coupes because stunning!
Current - Silver Grey MC, Imola Red heated Nappa & carbon trim. Aeros, H & R Coil-overs, 224s, OE Strut brace, Nav, cup-holders, DSP Hi-Fi, pdc, cruise, MFSW, no CDV! E90 330i daily
Gone - Montego Blue
Gone - Ruby Black

Thanks Mr Tidy! Have found a few online that would do. I have one eye on how it would look against the rest of the fleet and they are mostly fairly lively colours. But would be cool to travel and find the right car: take a road trip to get things off on the right footing.

Well it makes sense to look for a colour that works with your other cars. If you want a lively colour that is also rare, "Hellrot" and "Phoenix Yellow" might be for you!

You might have already found it, but here's a link to a HellRot Coupe for sale on here:- viewtopic.php?f=41&t=115645

I wanted a colour, and settled on Montego Blue. There are quite a few of them around, but it does make them easier to find!

Great choice of colour. I like dark trim and that works well. Not mad into the greys or silvers as had so many silver cars over the years, but, if the right thing pops up at the right price in Silver or Status Grey then who knows.

I'm really pleased with it, but I didn't want dark trim so was pleased to find one with Pearl Grey seats.

The Sport models that have the M-Sport seats as standard also have a black headlining, so I didn't really want black seats as well - but that's a personal preference!

I really didn't want silver either as I've had plenty of silver cars over the years and I just find it a bit bland - although it doesn't show dirt up too much!

I didn't want any silver, grey or black when I bought my first one, but convinced myself Ruby Black wasn't black. Although it looks it, until the sun hits it (for a week or two in the UK) and then it looks more purple - really stunning!

Likewise - had a black Cayenne S for five years and that was perhaps my one and only black car I think. My M3 is Daytona Violet: I absolutely love it and it is the sixth purple car I have owned. Would have another purple for sure, including Ruby Black.

Adding a Z4 Coupe to the collection

Picked up my first E86 on Saturday. It's a 2007 manual, good spec including xenons, nav, MF M wheel, heated M seats and 108s (which I like). Silver was not my first choice but I don't hate it. Now with 107k on the clock after a few hundred miles in the last 24 hours, am loving the shove of that N52K engine with pursuit mode engaged - rivals my M3 for sure. Nice economy also. Am settling in to the driving position and Ted the Jack Russell is not moaning too much about the boot.

It has good history, but it is due a service and I have a little list going. I was happy to buy with a service needed as it gives me a chance to get a very close look. I sent a deposit pre-inspection knowing there was work to do and nothing changed for me on pickup, so I paid what I offered. Now just looking forward to waving some spanners on it.

First job was the classic "coins rammed in ashtray hinge". Took some medieval persuasion but mission accomplished!

Thanks. Been enjoying the effective a/c this week in the baking heat and loving that practical hatch. I park it so I can just see the rear corner out the kitchen window and the silver is growing on me. The previous owner said he didn’t want silver either, but bought on condition and it never disappointed 👍🏻

Likewise .. silver wasn’t my first choice .. but when buying an “old” car condition and history becomes more important unless it’s pink of course :)
