Possible E89 purchase

Post by Yoghurt » Sun Jan 20, 2019 12:51 am

Hello.
I have been reading up on this forum and learnt quite a bit although feel I have only scratched the surface!
I am considering an E89 hard top, will be test driving one soon and am looking forward to the experience. Currently drive a 2l 320d which feels quite punchy to me so will be interested to drive the E89!

Welcome to the forum.

I had a 123d for over 6 years, then I got an E86 Z4 and found out what proper performance was.

Good luck finding the one you like - and don't forget some photos once you've found it!

Welcome to the forum, all E89's are hard top, the E85 was the material roof, but you can fit a hard top. The E86 is the hatchback Z4
.
Good luck with the hunt

Many thanks, that's the warmest welcome I have ever had joining a forum!

I tried an E89 from a very friendly, helpful dealer. It was 2.0 20i M sports S drive. This is my first z4 I have driven and did enjoy it. However i did not get the 'pushed back in the seat' feel I get from my auto 320d (I think is turbocharged) so I think I need to try a 2.5 or 3.0 variant. I also think an automatic would be my preference. So a useful test which has made me want to carry on looking!

Yes, your 320d will be a 4 cylinder Turbo-diesel so will have some mid-range "shove".

If you want to find a 2.5 litre E89 you need to look for a "23i" or a 3 litre will be a "30i". (No idea why BMW badged them that way). :?

There was also a 28i, which is the same 4 cylinder turbo as the 20i but in a higher state of tune. But as Rob says you could always have a 20i mapped to similar performance!

Anyway if you want to really go for it, a 3 litre turbo will be a 35i or 35is. The 35is has more power than the 35i and only came as an auto.

Keep searching until you find one that suits you!

I would agree with saying a 20i with a remap. £500 will bring you into the 240-280hp range and will feel very quick.

There’s a ton of people claiming to be experts out there, i went to evolve automotive on the strength of what I had read on their reputation & the fact they run your car on their dyno before & after to quantify the gains produced
