Z4 Coupe daily driver?

Post by SpyII » Mon Aug 20, 2018 1:30 pm

Hi All just passing by and wondering if the Z4 coupe is worth owning as a daily driver? I spend most of my time driving my F80 M and would like to have another vehicle to drive in and out of the office.

Manual z4c is a decent daily drive, I've had mine for two years and many miles.
Big boot, light steering, plenty of grunt, decent mpg
But Quite bad visibility, run flats cause tram lining (normal tyres don't)

Although I use a van for work and having said I would only use the Z4C on weekends, I fined myself in it nearly everyday :driving:

When I bought my Z4 coupe a couple of years ago, it was supposed to be my only car. But when I happened to use the car mainly on small journeys, engine light eventually came on after a year and was due to a misalignment of the cam caused by too much city driving (well, that is what the garage said). I also thought at that time that the ride was quite uncomfortable and driving on bad roads/streets was probably not the best way to enjoy a car that I liked so much.
I then decided to get a second car for the everyday drive, grocery shopping and driving around the city.
That left the Z4 for the weekends longer trips, which was ideal.
In a couple of months I will need to part with my actual every day car (a company car - Peugeot 508) and I will be left again with the Z4 as the only car.
I know that I will be back to the same situation as of liking the Z4 but not willing to drive it all the time in all circumstances.

Has been my daily driver for 10 years and 70,000 miles. Driven commuting into the city (30 - 45 minutes) for half that and rest commuting 20 - 30 minutes on country roads. All days, all weather. Still plenty of car to enjoy on the long driving trips/weekenders and 30+ mpg. Just grab a set of winters for the cold months.
Coupe - Montego Blue. 108's, simplest mod - second medical box :-)

The journey so far;
i) 1998 Ford Focus 1.8 Litre
ii) The Z
iii) what else is needed?

Sounds then like my experience was only bad luck and I should just drive it even more to solve any problem..? :driving:

My Z4MC was my daily driver for 140,000 miles, come rain or shine.

The only thing that curtailed it’s daily duties was an accident, and the 18 month struggle to get the repairs repaired properly.

Now using a £1000 shitbox Alfa diesel with scrapes & bangs all over it. Means I don’t have to worry where I park it, and don’t worry about someone cutting me up as much :P

Plus I save about £3k a year in fuel.
Trigger’s Z4MC
Some bits now over 163,000 miles, some less than 1,000 miles.

I used daily and racked up almost 90k miles in 5 years!
Just make sure it doesn't have runflats.. put proper rubber on such as Michelin Pilot sport 4 etc and it will transform the car!

Don't use mine as much now due to a change in circumstances but still gets used on weekends now.

So I'd say yeah... Go for it!

I'd be happy to use my Coupe as a daily - but it doesn't quite work with an elderly parent, walkers/Zimmers/wheelchairs!
Coupes because stunning!
Current - Silver Grey MC, Imola Red heated Nappa & carbon trim. Aeros, H & R Coil-overs, 224s, OE Strut brace, Nav, cup-holders, DSP Hi-Fi, pdc, cruise, MFSW, no CDV! E90 330i daily
Gone - Montego Blue
Gone - Ruby Black

What’s the reason you don’t want to take the M3?

Nothing wrong with a Z4C as a daily - just curious.

M3 makes sense, just not finding one in my budget. Will explore next when the opportunity presents itself. Automatic transmission was key on the daily.
