Classic old fart with new toy
Hello everyone. I'm a classic car fan and not too shabby with the spanners. I fully restored a MGB a few years ago (see picture) and that is a keeper. Also in the picture is a Stag which I recommissioned after being in a collection for a few years which I recently sold as I wanted to do another restoration before my knees and back finally give up (I'm 61). However............I was out with some mates a few weeks ago walking round the Peak district and saw a 2004 Z4 for sale privately. I took a photo of the contact number but forgot about it until I sold the Stag when I realised I'd like a 'modern' classic too and my thoughts wandered back to the Z4.
Anyway I bought it yesterday. It needs some tlc but has a long MOT and the 2.5i engine purrs - very impressed with the drive. It needs :
- alloys refurbing
- keys do not operate the remote central locking
- front disc dust covers rattling
- general tidy up befitting a 14yo car
- roof works fine but I may move the motor into the boot (are there any idiots guide for that?)
From my early look at the TinterWeb the middle 2 are known issues so I'll be asking for help in the main forum with the central locking issue as modern car electrics are a dark art to me - my 1972 MGB electrics are so basic that even a simpleton like me can understand them. I'm really looking forward to getting stuck in, worryingly my wife has taken a fancy to it.........

Welcome to the Forum. There are lots of knowledgeable and helpful folk who are usually more than willing to offer advice and point you in the right direction. If your good lady has taken a shine to the Z you had better get a move on with the refurbishment. ‘Happy wife means happy life’.

Looks great
Not trying to be clever but have you checked inside the boot lid to see if the wind deflector is stored there?

Obewan - sadly no there isn't, we're they standard when new or optional extra. There is a cloth one for sale on the forum but which is best, cloth or solid ?
Jabber - how do I do that, I've got a toothbrush charger

I think they were an optional extra - but not 100% certain
Mine was in the holder in the boot when I bought the car. Do you have the clips on the roll-over hoops?
This may influence the type you want. If they are not there the 'gimp' type for sale you mention will be an easier fit
Personal choice I guess
There are also perspex deflectors for sale. I've no experience of these but have read that they can cause some wind buffeting - the mesh ones let the wind through

Hi and welcome.
You're not alone in buying a Z4 later in life - I was mid-50s before I got one.
Good to see you are enjoying your Z4 - when the OH isn't grabbing the keys first!
I like the look of your other toys too - you're starting to get a collection.
I think you just need to plug the toothbrush charger in and sit the key on it - it's inductive charging IIRC.
