Hello all,

just bought my first Z4 3 weeks ago (cue the rain) and just getting to know it. 2.0i e85 ruby black metallic with beige leather. Great fun to drive however one thing that bothers me every time i get in the car is the smell. its not smoke or burning oil but is coming from the boot into the car. The boot smells so bad i'm reluctant to put anything in it. The grey carpet type boot lining and the battery compartment cover smells and when you peel it back it seems to smell underneath on the metal also. Ive done a bit of digging on the net and someone said it may be the sound deadening material or some sort of reaction with a releasing agent when the parts where manufactured. Has anyone ever come across this or have any advice? im thinking of stripping the boot lining and giving it all a good wash and giving the boot a wash out at the same time. Separately from the smell i think, i also i noticed when i took the battery cover off the vent was'nt connected to the battery. Its a new battery and i could'nt see a vent connection hole on it so maybe its a sealed battery but does the vent pipe connect to the exhaust system? if so does it need capping off? Any advice would be much appreciated!

Heres a picture guys. Just tried one of those turtle Wax odor X thingies. I'll have a sniff later and see if it has made any difference.

Thanks Mr tidy, I always wanted a Z4 and this one came up on my doorstep with only 54k on it I snapped it up. Could do with the wheels refinishing but no rush, just enjoying driving it at the moment.

Welcome to the forum, is it a damp smell as these can leak water into the boot from the 3rd brake light and other seals. Look under the battery and see if there's any water there.

Hi firebobby, could well be damp mate but when I've checked the carpets there are no wet patches, could be historical possibly as the 3rd brake light is cracked and loose fitting. On the list of jobs to do. What do you think of the clear 3rd brake light?

I have and like the red brake light, I think the clear one goes better with certain colours. Make sure you get the new type of spring for the unit, I think they are less harse.
Try using a hose on the rear of the car and see if water enters the boot. :)
