New to me Deep Sea Blue Z4 35i DCT

Post by Beeacon » Fri Jul 13, 2018 2:25 pm

Hello from Manchester,

Following trying to buy the car at the national forum meet in the lakes (and failing thanks to HSBC), I was finally able to meet Dave1971 last week and drive the car back. After spending some time to get to know the car, I’d like to present my ‘new to me’ BMW Z4 35i sDrive DCT.

It’s been really well looked after, and I cannot praise Dave1971 enough for the condition he has kept the car in, and his patience in dealing with my incessant questions about every little detail. I love the history about the car in the old threads of the forum and it went a long way towards my confidence in buying privately after a bad experience; the seller tried to dupe me into buying a white 35i with a leaky gearbox, very long crank time, and crunchy brakes on reverse.
With the previous history of the car being so well looked after, and in the interest of doing the same, I’d like to keep this thread almost as a hub of information about it.

Spec highlight:
2009 e89 35i sDrive
59k miles @ purchase June 2018.
DCT – Sports Transmission with Double Clutch
Adaptive M Suspension
Park Distance Control
Cruise Control
Professional Navigation System
Professional HiFi System
Multifunction Steering Wheel
Auto Wipers
Sports seats
Heated seats
Full spec of the car can be seen in Dave1971’s purchase thread: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=94123

Modifications from stock:
Mild tune to 370bhp.
LED angel eye side lights.
LCI side indicator upgrade.
Smart top module.
Strut brace (re-powder coated black).
K&N panel air filter.
March 2017 Style 313 19” Alloys with Bridgestone Runflats.
Stubby aerial (I understand that this is controversial, but whippies don’t do well with car covers; though I have retained the whippy).
Bovee Tune2air Bluetooth adaptor (non-combox). Behaves as a Y-cable in the armrest but allows music to be controlled from the steering wheel. Works with iPhone music and Spotify.
VIOFO A129 Front & Rear 1080p hardwired dashcam.
Magnetic low-profile vent phone mount.
Siramik SC15 hydrophobic ceramic coat to the paint after a stage 2 detail underneath, see beading below.

Future Modifications:
Chrome exhaust tips.
M Sport front calipers (Maybe. I’ve been thinking about upgrading the brakes due to 370hp. I may upgrade brake lines instead having replaced the fluid and front pads recently.)

Wheels:
Summer Wheels:
New Front: Vredestein Ultrac Vorti 235/35 R19 96Y on Replica Style 313 8Jx19 ET40 (with 10mm H&R spacer 5x120 72.8 ).
New Rear: Vredestein Ultrac Vorti 255/35 R19 96Y on Replica Style 313 9Jx19 ET40.

Old Front: Bridgestone Potenza RE050A RFT 225/35 R19 88Y on Style 313 8Jx19 ET29.
Old Rear: Bridgestone Potenza RE050A RFT 255/30 R19 91Y on Style 313 9Jx19 ET40.

Winter Wheels (No rub experienced with M Adaptive Suspension):
Front: Michelin Pilot Alpin 4 225/40 R18 92V on Bola B25 Gloss Gunmetal 8.5J ET30.
Rear: Michelin Pilot Alpin 4 225/40 R18 92V on Bola B25 Gloss Gunmetal 8.5J ET30.

I think that’s enough waffle for now and I hope to meet some of you at the next Z4-Forum national meet!

Current list of things that need fixing:

Current list of minor things that need fixing:
- right paddle shifter has some of the metallic coating peeling away. Needs gluing down.
- gasket seal to drivers side door sill isn't seated correctly. Likely just needs clearing out of any debris and reseating.
- Wingmirrors squeaking on hot summer days again, need another clean out.

List of minor things fixed:
- BMW hub cap roundels replaced.
- BMW aluminium dust caps replaced.
- Door handle plug replaced part no. (51419167014).
- stiff rubber seals treated with gummi pflege.
- rear camera cable re-installed.
- Petrol pump kept clicking off before full. Cleaned up area around filler cap and issue seems to have gone away.
- Low pressure in windscreen washer jets. Cleaned washer tank out and refitted.
- Minor condensation in nearside rear lamp in winter. Removed, seal cleaned and glued then refitted.
- gasket seal to drivers side door sill dried out and broken away part no. (51717229294). https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-Z4-E89-S ... SwT69bPJ8D
- Replaced 2No. original roof salmon relays as a preventative measure. Part no. (12631742690). viewtopic.php?f=23&t=119167
- squeaky left wing mirror. Dismantled, cleaned up of any dirt in the folding mirror mechanism, sprayed with PTFE lubricant and re-assembled.
- Very minor condensation started to show in offside rear lamp in winter. Waited for a Eurocarparts sale on the revised light fitting and jumped at it for £100.

List of major things fixed:
- Boot operation failed to lock, repaired. viewtopic.php?p=1588457#p1588457
- Cracks to rear alloys on summer tyres. Failed to resolve under warranty with BMW and had to buy new alloys. viewtopic.php?p=1598643#p1598643
- Broken coil spring rear driver's side (replaced following fitment of summer tyres after checking all four corners for any other surprises). Replaced with LESJÖFORS rear coil springs Part No: 33536785087 & 33536785088 (M-adaptive suspension).
- Electric water pump failed right on schedule @69k miles (usually between 60k & 80k miles). Replaced along with the thermostat.
- Coilpack at front of engine worn out. Replaced coilpack and all new spark plugs fitted.
- Front adaptive struts began to get a light oil misting, indicating that within a year or two they will require replacing. Found a place in Sheffield that refurbishes them and had them fitted. Front end feels much better on comfort setting.
- Roof started playing up and working intermittently. This was traced back to the wiring leading to the rear screen hall sensors. Wiring was bypassed with some flexi-wire by Mike at the ZedShed and perfect operation since.
- Handbrake failed to engage. Traced this back to the old battery and a software update required. Software update fixed the issue, new battery installed for peace of mind.

One of the big advantages of buying a forum owned Zed - where else would you find that comprehensive history. Congrats on the purchase

Thanks for the welcome guys, really enjoying the car. I cleaned it last night with all the Gyeon stuff and the detailing done by the detailer is incredible! The car comes up like a mirror! You can see the clouds in one photo quite well, and the mortar bed of the brickwork as well as the plane vapour trails in the other; all the more reason to keep it in tip top condition.

Cheers!

LED angel eye side lights.
Smart top module.
Strut brace.
March 2017 Style 313 19” Alloys with Bridgestone RunShats (because every time you go over a pothole you defecate) to be replaced next year.
Whippy aerial swapped for a stubby (I understand that this is controversial, but whippies don’t do well with car covers; though I will retain the whippy if I change my mind).
Bovee Tune2air Bluetooth adaptor (non-combox). Behaves as a Y-cable in the armrest but allows music to be controlled from the steering wheel. Works with iPhone music and Spotify.

Future Modifications:
LCI side indicator upgrade
Winter wheels and tyres
Non-Runflat Summer tyres
M Sport front callipers (Maybe. I’ve been thinking about upgrading the brakes due to 370hp, and the front pads running low. I may upgrade brake lines and fluid instead)
Maybe a steering wheel cover if I can find one for a fluffy E-brake.
Image

Wheel Ideas:
I love the Style 313s and want to protect the diamond cut finish from the harshness of winter driving, I’d also like to not be the ‘BMW**ker’ stuck in the snow. So I’m looking to buy some 18” alloys for winter that will still look nice (17” just look a bit too small and plain for such a beautiful car IMO, and want to leave room for a potential front calliper upgrade). I like the style of the CSL wheels in a gunmetal coat or something else that won’t be hurt by winter grime.

Summer Tyres (I doubt I’ll be doing any track with the car):
Front: Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetrical 3 235/35 R19 on Style 313 (8J ET29?)
Rear: Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetrical 3 255/35 R19 on Style 313 (9J ET40?)

Winter Tyres:
Front: R18 on CSL
Rear: R18 on CSL

Exterior Cleaning:
I have Dave1971 to blame for this after his comment along the lines of ‘just watch a Youtube video and you’ll get a good idea of how to keep it looking nice’. I fell down the rabbit hole hard on this one, so I thought I’d post what I’ve got here. I’ll update with before and after photos soon.
Karcher K4 Full Control Pressure Washer
Gyeon Q2M Bug & Grime
Gyeon Q2M Snow Foam
Gyeon Q2M Bathe+
Gyeon Q2M Iron
Gyeon Q2M Cure (for protecting/boosting ceramic coat)
Gyeon Q2 Tire
Gyeon Wetcoat (for girlfriend’s car so I can mask how much I’ve spent 8) )

Very nice z indeed,op.....having seen it many times I know how well Laine looked after it,and how gutted he was at having to sell it.
I too really like those wheels, the BMW performance ones he has on are great looking
If I had been in the market for an e89,35i this would have been the one I would have got :D
The Professional Detailing he got done on it before sale made it look even better,if possible :D
Good idea getting winter wheels on it
Preserve those 19s.

Hope to see you at a meet sometime :driving:

Hi Craig3.2, I'm intending to hit the next national meet in 2019.

Current ideas for a set of 18" winter wheels include:
Style 513 and style 640... Not sure if they'll fit yet, but I'll do some digging.

Style 513:

Style 640M:

Had an issue with the boot soft close mechanism going up and down for about 30 seconds when the boot was shut. After some scouring I fixed mine last night. Here are a load of photos of the process.

If you're considering fixing it yourself getting the white plastic clip out can be quite difficult, and you'll need a T20, T30, and T40 torx screw to pull it off. Also a dab of solder and some heat shrink would make for a much cleaner connection than using butt connectors in hindsight.
