Just bought my Z4 :)

Hi folks!
Yesterday finally I bought my E85 Z4 2.5i and want to say hi to everybody

My first thought of buying Z4 was back in 2012 but finally i chosed E90, but yesterday my little dream came true.
As I will drive it only on weekends (probably sundays only as my girlfriend works on saturdays) I wanted a 3.0i.

I found this well equipped with full service history 2.5i so I started to read about 2.5i vs 3.0i and the overal conclusion was that 2.5i has plenty of power and you can feel the difference between them only above 4k rpm, so I decided to buy it.

And I'm already a bit dissapointed . The car pulls not bad, but you really have to rev it over 4500rpm to feel it. I had 204hp E90 diesel and no joking but it felt quicker as a daily driver because turbo was nicely massaging your back from 2k rpm (E90 had 7.4s to 62mph where Z4 has 7.0s).

If 3.0i behaves the same way, then I was just expecting something unreal. If 3.0i is noticeably quicker (which I believe because it's 5.9s to 62mph) then I am dreaming about 3.0 since my first 5 minutes of owning 2.5i . Now I can't imagine having 2.0i or 2.2i unless you don't care at all ;P

Let's forget about the engine! The car is pretty well equipped:

-Sat Nav
-Leather seats heated, electric with memory
-HiFi System Proffessional DSP
-Xenon Lights with celaning system
-Cruise control
-Fold in mirrors with auto dip
-CD Changer for 6 CD's
-PDC rear

The car has 15 years and over 100k miles but interior is in very good shape! Plastics doesn't crack, leather seats are in good shape with no wear or tear.


I have couple things to do:
-Headlight restore
-refreshing the interior (I will clean the seats and all the plastics although they does not seem to be dirty)
-Oil service

Some mods planned:
-I have to be able to play music from my Iphone. I don't know right now what's the best solution and I know that there is a lot about it on the forum so I will read it all and chose something. I will add AUX or I will buy some module which allows to connect an iphone via bluetooth - what do you reccomend?

-I will think about changing the steering wheel to the multifunction one with ability to change tracks from it

-I have to install a dash camera (I think there is a DIY manual how to take a power from the light above the head on the forum so I will follow it)

-I will remove CDV probably

-I need to read if it's possible in my model to open/close the roof using the key

Hi and welcome. You’ve been driving a diesel, the power delivery is so different, but you’ll get used to it.

And yes you’ll need to use more of the Rev range

Hi and welcome from another new Stirling grey 2.5i owner. I’m not disappointed.

Turbo diesels are lazy drivers. Loads of power and more especially torque from low down. Barely any need to change gear. Where’s the fun in that?! A normally aspirated silky smooth BMW 6 cylinder petrol is far more satisfying to drive. Yes you have to rev it and use the gears, but that’s what makes it a pleasure.

Get out there, find some good roads, drive it how it was meant to be driven and I assure you the disappointment will be gone.

Oh and car looks great. Stirling grey is the best colour and style 107 alloys just suit it so well.

Shame you are slightly disappointed with the performance after your diesel, but from the numbers you quoted it is slightly quicker, just in a different way! With a diesel you can just let the torque do the work, but the petrols need some revs! Although a 3.0i would have given you a bit more torque, so might have suited you better but they are harder to find and usually dearer.

Anyway, just get out this weekend with the roof down and give it an Italian tune-up.

Cracking pics! It's a lovely looking car. I tried my first 2.5i today (I want a 3.0 but wanted to try out the 2.5, just to see) and although it did have less poke than the 3.0 it still looked and sounded fantastic. I drive a 200+ bhp TDI daily too and it does seem odd to be looking for a weekend sports car that won't necessarily run rings around my daily, but it's the experience and involvement I'm after. I'm sure you'll enjoy your top-down motoring on these sunny evenings, and a 3.0 can always make its way into your life some time down the line!

Welcome, given the age and mileage it's a sure fire bet that the VANOS seals have hardened and are allowing oil to bypass the variable valve system so not providing the correct torque curve you should be experiencing. It's a well documented issue with early cars, later on the seals were modified. There are lots of threads on it if you search, everybody who has the seals replaced comment that they hadn't realised how soft the pick-up had become until the seals were upgraded. Unless you have receipts on file I'd say it's a must and should improve things for you.
