Managed to identify the correct replacement coil packs (Bosch 0 221 504 470), now all running sweetly.
Had a couple of false starts with misfires due to poor plug connections, but now all is well.
You have to make sure the packs are pushed fully on to the plug (no satisfying click like the old design) and it is critical to ensure the plugs from the ECU are pushed all the way home (don't rely on the cap clips to do it).
managed to get all 6 new bosch coil packs and 6 NGK spark plugs for about £150, so not too scary.
