I won't post a 'wanted' until I'm sure what I want, so not to waste anyone's time, but I think its a 28i

Would anyone think this is good, bad or indifferent?

Hi seems like a good price for the spec, only thing is the relatively high mileage for a N20 engine...it’s well documented that the 6 pot engines generally go on forever...150k+ miles (give or take plugs, turbos, injectors, coils, fuel pumps, water pumps)..

Not sure the N20 has such a reputation, not that I’ve heard of many N20s breaking down..

One thing that will allow you to open up your search criteria is that for approx £400 you can re-map a 20I or 18i to match or exceed the BHP of the 28i.

Apart from a marginal change in front brake disc size 330mm vs 300mm that’s the only difference between a same age 28i and 20i, options spec excepted..

thanks Pbondar, that's interesting to hear about the re-mapping... so if you match the bhp, you can get more or less the same 0-60 speed in the 20i once re-mapped? That can increase then options I guess!

ps - what's a whippy?

Hi, most people go for around 280 BHP re-map which especially with the ZF 8 speed auto box means it goes a lot quicker than a 28i manual..

Be aware that re-map is different from a plug in box..there are many threads on this..in simplification for max improvement a 28i can use a re-map or a box, for a 18i or a 20i you need a re-map..

The reason why the auto does better at around 240 bhp+ is that it changes faster than a human can!

A whippy, is, if you stay around long enough, a 'brexit' type feud between those who believe that an aerial should look like an aerial and those who think an aerial should look like a matt black stubby pencil.. :poke:

Thanks Pbondar!
Well, I was looking at your car... I do like it, black looks great with the yellow.... but does it not have a whippy? :)
I always thought I'd want a manual, but that's interesting to know... I think the auto is a paddle shifter if it is DCH?

Is there much difference between the 18i and the 20i then if you can remap either of them?

Still lurking :).
any thoughts on why so few 28i out there for sake?

Also, do all the autos have the dct? I’m now thinking I shouldn’t discount autos. I’m sure they are not like an average car auto?

I can only assume the price differential made it hard for people to justify going for a 28i when they were new!

And possibly some of those who might have done talked themselves into splashing out on a 35i/35is.

Sorry I can't help with your "auto" question - but a DCT is a twin-clutch "automated" gearbox, so is nothing like the 3/4 speed automatics with torque converters I grew up with (probably why I never liked them).
Coupes because stunning!
Current - Silver Grey MC, Imola Red heated Nappa & carbon trim. Aeros, H & R Coil-overs, 224s, OE Strut brace, Nav, cup-holders, DSP Hi-Fi, pdc, cruise, MFSW, no CDV! E90 330i daily
Gone - Montego Blue
Gone - Ruby Black

Hi, the 18i/20i/28i all had the ZF 8HP 8 speed auto box as an option the 35i 35s had the 7 speed Getrag double clutch auto box.

The 23i and 30i had the 6 speed earlier ZF auto box.

The 8 speed ZF is night and day away from the earlier 3/4/5 autoboxes..I spent 35 years and 29 cars before getting an auto..

The ZF 8 speed is the same box as in many supercars as standard Aston, Maserati, Lambo as well as riff raff such Jags, Rollers, and Audis.

It takes a little learning curve to get the best out of the revy but torquey 4 potters with the ZF box, far simpler with a manual, but I would never ever buy a manual car agin now..all the old arguments are long gone ..

In fact on the 28i the 0-60 is faster for the auto box than the manual as it can change far faster than you can!

To cut to the chase, with 2020 hindsight I would say if you are in the market for a 4 potter then look at the spec you want then if necessary get a re-map..ignore the base engine spec..all IMHO..

Would anyone know is it possible to fit a golf bag into the boot of a e89 roadster? If so, only when the roof is up? or what’s the luggage store situation?

I don’t play goff but I think you would get one or maybe two only with the lid up..you definitely won’t get one with the lid down as it will interfere with all the interlocks ...

Hardened goff players may have a more enlightened view... :fuelfire:
