Right, unless anyone has any preference to do it themselves I'll pick this up.
What are the full requirements?

It's your baby now, you can make it as easy or complicated as you want! Only thing I'd say is that you should have the user names the same, or even linked. So if I put my location it would be under user "kis" then you should be able to pm or view the z4 forum user profile or something. Otherwise may be hard to reach out to a fellow local member! Just my thoughts

That's great greg81.
It used to be quite interesting seeing how many forum members lived nearby!
IIRC it used to come up with a map covering a few miles of your own location with a "flag" for all forum members in that map area with their user name. But you could also zoom in and out.
I hope you can get it set up.

Good idea.
The old one was, a bit out of date.

All these ideas are great, however to tie it in to the sign-up to the forum it would need to be built in conjunction with the forum owners and consider GDPR etc.
If there's enough appetite from the forum owners and to create an API to expose some limited data (username, approx location, Carly?? Etc) to small app then I'm happy to work together on that.
Alternatively id build a small stand-alone app and users would need to submit their data again to that and it wouldn't be affiliated to the forum

I think easiest would be stand alone, but stipulate you keep the user name the same?

I've made a start building out a demo. The data source part can come later, but for now I'll build it standalone

Managed half an hour at lunchtime and have this super-simple, basic starting point.
I never actually saw the old map so would be good to know what people are expecting

Brilliant! Thats ideal, even just a wee icon like that with the username would do
As you rightly say GDPR would be an issue if a connection between the forum and this was created and that would be very messy and prohibitive in terms of work imo.

This is brilliant! (Although being the pedant that I am, the spelling of ‘location’ is incorrect in the panel that pops up).
The sample user that has Essex as their location - does that automatically default to the centre of the county? Was just intrigued as you have Essex for one user and then Glasgow for another.
Really, really good though - just what we want

Great work. I'd be tempted to reduce the size of the photo a little. Would it be possible to have a filter on the info fields so for example you could just show owners of specific models?
