My insurance just emailed me

This is getting worrying. Could they not pay out if I don't contact BMW?

You may have seen in the news recently that some BMW car models are unfortunately affected by a security flaw. As a customer and owner of a BMW we wanted to make you aware of this so you can take the necessary precautions and help prevent thefts of BMWs.

BMW has advised that the security breach only affects models which were built from 2006 to September 2011.

The security flaw lies with the electronic key. A device now exists which enables its user to access a car's on-board computer and program a blank key. In the wrong hands, a thief can steal a BMW in just a few minutes using the device.

How you can reduce the threat of car theft:

BMW has announced that they will offer a free upgrade of security features for cars affected. Therefore we would recommend that you contact your BMW service department or your nearest BMW dealer who will be able to advise you further.

I would contact them and see if your car is effected , if it isnt than get writen proof and produce this to your insurance company this should cover you in the event of a claim , and if your car is effected than get them to fix it fre of charge its not worth taken the risk as insurance companys will do every thing posible not to pay out.

i would think they could try and use it as a get out clause book it in pronto...... shouldn't BMW be sending this out

Insurance will try anything to avoid liability if your car is stolen.... I would act upon the email to avoid any doubt

On the 'watchdog' thread recently I posted a q about whether the insurance companies would latch onto this to jack premiums... Seems they are laying some covering fire perhaps, in order to request you provide proof of having the work done if you want a decent renewal quote... As said, I would call them and establish whether they are just being caring, or have anther motive... Suspect the latter unfortunately

I think you're 100% right, come renewal time (or theft claim time!) they will want proof that the update has been done.

To be honest it has taken them a while to start this, so I sense some 'industry thinking' - I reckon you'll struggle to find an insurer who won't jack the premiums without you having the update, now that BMW have admitted the issue publicly. And in all honesty, as a business decision it is the right one if applied sensibly. Which it won't be
