5th Gear

Post by Half Colin » Fri Jul 01, 2011 9:59 am

Who uses it?

Yes, I know you guys with only 5 gears do but the question's aimed at those with 6.

I go from 4th to 6th on the way up and mostly 6th to 4th on the way down. I cruise around in 6th or 4th around town as well so rarely use 5th.

I use it if i am stuck behind another vehicle if the revs need to be balance out... as in when the revs are too high in 4th and too low in 6th... can't think of any other reason

To drop "Vectra boy \ Audi Man" who's been sitting on the boot once the traffic clears on the M40

5th tends to settle these matters while keeping the speed licence friendly :police:.

Using 4th and flooring in the M would reach a ton before you can blink :) entertaining, but I really don't want another ban

I use the right gear for the right purpose.

If I want to VMAX the car then I need to use 5th, as there's a soft limiter in 6th.

I also use 5th on the high speed 'Ring stuff as 6th is too long.

Slightly different I barely use 4th, 3rd is so flexible that it's then straight into 5th and then to 6th, if I'm tootling round town then I'm in top by 40 mph.

I also block change from 4th to 5th, I find the gearing on the 3.0si too short so you spend alot less time in 3rd and 5th.

The 5th gear in my 6 speed gets constant use during the odd occasion when my girlie drives my Growler...

I always go from 4th to 6th.
I will accelerate on the dual carrageway then get to 60-70 then change into 6th to cruise at 70mph.

I will only use 5th if i'm on a twisty A road.

5th in the M sounds great at low-ish revs accelerating up a slight incline
