You need to remove the steering wheel,

1st disconnect the battery for at least 15 mins
2nd poke a mid size screwdriver through the 2 holes in the back cover to push the airbag clips and free the airbag, remove the airbag from the wheel.
3rd using a 16mm socket loosen the bolt holding the wheel on and remove the wheel, there are a lining marks on the shaft and the wheel.
4th remove the rear cover, 3 torx bolts.
5th remove the torx bolts from th spoke covers.
6th gently prise of the spoke covers taking care not to break the clips.

reassemble in the reverse order.

hope it helps.

Thanks Richard,

Didn't realise I would have to take the whole wheel off...

It's not as bad as it sound's once you have done it once you realise how easy it is, the worst part is waiting the 15 - 20 mins after disconnecting the airbag.

It's all to get access to the bolts on the rear cover as you can't get am them easily with the wheel in situ.

OK change of plans - I won that M steering wheel on Ebay, so changing the whole wheel. still the same steps I guess, but I wanted to confirm the disconnecting the battery part:

Disconnecting: Negative then positve
Reconnecting: Positive then negative

Is that correct?

Should I do any sort of checks before reconnecting the battery?

Also, other than checking the front tyres move left and right should i be checking anything else? Wouldn't want the steering wheel coming off at 70mph!! "touch wood"

I'm probably being extra and will realise this once I've done it, but I'm a bit paranoid with this stuff and like to make sure i haven't missed anything.

p.s.

I only ever disconnect the earth as that's enough to break the circuit
