Dashboard top storage compartment

Post by Steham » Tue Mar 26, 2024 12:09 pm

Hi all,

I'm looking at shortly commencing the retro-fitting of the cic system. The one thing that's gonna niggle me, is the fact that my car has the extended leather on the dash board, meaning the dash compartment lid is covered in leather too. When I fit the motorized screen instead, it'll have the black plastic lid on it when it's folded down.
Does anyone know if the plastic trim on the outside of the motorized monitor comes off, and the compartment lid comes off, so I can swap the two around maybe?

Any ideas?

Steve

I can, categorically, 100% confirm that the covers come off.
And to prove that, here is a photo that shows my original cubby cover fitted to a spare flip up screen

How does the screen unit come apart?

I had a look when recovering the dash but couldn’t see an obvious way in?

If I remember correctly, the cover needs to come forwards (towards you, looking at the screen) to be released. Alas that photo is 4 years old now, but I do still have the screen, not with the lid attached, so can confirm this tomorrow morning when I can get in the shed for a look.

Thanks Dave. I really want to source the parts for less than £1k!

No luck yet.

Things like the iDrive controller, you can pick one up for a 3 series (E9x) from about £60, you just need to change the surround bracket (about £18 from BMW). Saves paying well over £100 for one that is E89 specific.
Unfortunately everything else is E89 only, but they do come up from time to time at good prices, in fact there was a full kit for£900 a few months ago.

I seem to be gathering bits n bobs for this quite nicely. The HARDEST bit to find is the replacement mounting cage for the new cic head unit. I, like you, Dave, managed to source one from Lithuania...WITH the cic head unit for 263 euros...about £228, which I think must be a bargain. Got idrive controller for a 3 series for £24, so just waiting for the fitting bezel for it, which is ordered. Just really waiting for the flip up screen now, which I'm watching a few on eBay currently....got the cic head unit trim, idrive controller cabling, and then, all I need is the emulator harness....and I'll probably fit the mr12volt carplay/android add-on box while I'm at it...so...I'm getting there

Nice work Steve, although I did use the emulator box initially it failed and affected ither systems. So I had the headunit "sorted" with all of the FSC codes input directly. Everything now works perfectly. Although........

I am now using a different emulator, this one is so I can have my rear camera through the original CIC software and displayed like it should be.
Now, obviously, I don't need to do this as I have the Mr12volt box, but I did it "because I can!" It will also be another video eventually and another option for anyone who doesn't have, or want, the mmi box.

OK, so I've just been in the shed and took some photos. Turns out I do still have the old (wrong) top on it, which is good as it shows the clips that are used to clip it into the top of the screen.
So using the old one you'll have a redundent button, and I did have to cut this down so it would fit (this was a very early idea before I got hold of my bargain current screen), but at least you'll have the correct leather.
