Z4 coupes for £5000 and £5500

Always going to be a circular debate - if you want a coupe and have a bottom of the barrel budget, you take those risks. But, if its a well cared for example you mitigate those risks to a degree. You can triple that budget and get a top of the barrel car, and still end up paying out big bills because its low miles and owners havent done the water pump, bushes are old and crusty, suspension is original, car has been sat in the garage not moving for years which is also bad for it, so on and so forth.

The 5k one and a 15k one can both drive to a car meet, park next to each other, both look great, and both drive home. Both have their own inherent risks as does any older car ownership.

You may be right, although higher mileage ones can be a bargain as so many people seem to avoid them!
I'd say that the right auto SE would make someone a lovely, cheap cruiser/commuter that isn't too bad to drive on more interesting roads.

I am on 100% of the purchase value at the moment in doing the things to the car to get it up to scratch, which will be fine as I am planning to keep it for a while but if you look at a 2 year project - it would never be worth it.
Current:
911-50 Black - unique spec
X5M - 575 hp of fun in a V8
Abarth 595 Comp.
Golf Clipper - collectors item
Z4 3.0si Black Sapphire
VW ID.3

Previous:
Z4M Silver Grey - non flimper spec (gone to Bing)
Z4 3.0 Toledo

I think that pretty much covers all non-M Z4s at the moment. Prices are on the floor for everything but the really special ones.

Someone on the Facebook group was lamenting the lack of cars for sale with loads having been spent on them. Unless anyone is looking to take a monumental bath on resale, there would be absolutely no point pouring money into a Z4 right now unless you were planning to keep it.

Not just non Ms wbac offered me £6k for my Z4MR with 77k

Spent more than that on it.

There's a lot of cars for sale not a touch on mine for 14-16k. its also a rare car being a 1-3 combo. I don't think the market has reset yet.

WBAC isn't exactly the baseline for these type of cars but was a shock as before Christmas it was more than double that value. I would tread carefully if buying a clapped out car that needs money spending on it unless its a long term car.

I wouldn't base much on the WBAC valuation. That's not really reflective of the market, and lots of other variables go into their offers.

I don't think we're going to see a 'reset' for a long while yet, if at all. Look at the classic auctions - loads of cars going unsold or cheap. We're heading back to a point where new cars are actually depreciating again, now that supply has caught up. Lots of PCP balloon payment gamblers are likely to get caught out in the next year or two.

Which is why its a great time to buy a high miler that isn't clapped out - it could be a bargain. Mileage in no way reflects condition often the correlation between the two is pretty weak. Plenty of low mile mile sheds out there going for bigger money that I wouldn't touch. I saw one that was rotten when looking myself, on the face of it at the low miles it looked sparkling outside but underneath falling apart...it had spent a significant amount of its life by the sea...

Always buy on condition, if its older and higher miler, check all the perishables, look for good history, do all the extra checks with a fine tooth comb. Obviously don't buy something for 5k and spend 5k on it. But similarly dont buy something for 15k and spend 5k on it either, you will be out of pocket for 5k regardless at sale time.

I purchased my E86 as a "buy-and-hold" - or rather a "buy-and-drive-and-maintain". The driving is fun, and I enjoy the mechanical challenges.

I could never justify the amount I have spent on purchasing and then refurbishing my 18+ year old Zed as a financial investment. I feel fortunate to have a car that was a summer-only vehicle (no rust), in good condition, with lower miles. But in less than two years in my ownership I've spent over 50% of my purchase cost in refreshing suspension & cooling, trim, wheels, and tires. Sure there's more to come, but did I mention that it's fun to drive ? It's a more satisfying drive than most any current model I could afford.

Damn, Montego Blue looks fantastic under interior lights!
What the hell is happening to the red Rover in the backgound, it looks like it's fallen off the lift!
