Looking for a successful DCT sump plate solution, please

Post by Busterboo » Mon Feb 05, 2024 3:49 pm

In 80,000 miles, my 35iS has had 3 new DCT sump plates, all original BMW and all failed.

Is there a (reasonably easily available) replacement that will succeed, please?

If you google BMW DCT alloy sump usually with M3 it will show a number of alloy based sump offerings

Expect to pay £500 upwards

They usually offer a replacement and deeper sump versions

Deeper sump versions won’t fit with the under tray in place

Most come with an inset o ring in place of the BMW gasket
Spending time with a 35i, previous convictions: Fiat 20V Turbo Coupe, TVR Chimera, Jaguar XKR, Porsche 997 C4S

I’d be looking into why they keep failing….and my guess is main dealers have been fitting them haven’t they Buster..?

A good Indy would be my next step if you can’t do it yourself. :driving:

Problem is the DCT leaks from 5 locations..often after a year or two..so your 12 month dealer warranty isn't going to be much use, especially if it leaks from one of the areas not fixed last time.. :tumbleweed:

Ok, I read it as being the same part (it must be Porsche that does the 2 year warranty)

They’ve had 3 goes at it Paul, how many more before the inconvenience of taking it in so many times makes it not worth it…? It’s clearly not as simple a job as it sounds and as B21 says more than a couple of places where it leaks…throw the towel in and get Reddish or similar in who know what they’re doing to sort it.

This is one reason I don’t like warranties and would rather bank the warranty cash for places like Reddish to fix stuff if you can’t do repairs yourself.

Anyway that’s just my take on it.

As I've posted in other threads, John, my experience doesn't support your point of view. Insured warranty repairs have cost far more than the policies. Indeed, the parts alone have cost more, so, whether the work was done by an AD or an indy, the policies have more than paid for themselves.

This has been so for Jaguar, Porsche and BMW over a period of 18 years.

As for indies, my experience is that, like ADs, there are good and not-so-good ones. Whatever, being an indy certainly isn't a guarantee of being good. Sticking up a sign outside a railway arch - 'The Wicky Wacky Woo Garage - BMW Specialists - Lot of Contempt for ADs in full supply' - guarantees nothing other than a queue of punters, who want an indy to be their 'little treasure'.

p.s. I use an indy (the owner, two guys and an MoT man) for non-warranty stuff, of course. The labour rate is half the AD's £140/hour and their waiting list is much shorter, sometimes same-day. Good as they are, they haven't fixed the DCT sump plate leak yet.

Well your ‘Warranty’….isnt worth s**t here is it Buster as they’ve had the car 3 times and it’s still dropping oil, so you’re paying for it and will also have to pay someone else to fix the issue…yep, well worth it…. :poke:

Ok I get the majority of warranty stuff works for you, fine, but with this leak it’s obviously above the stealers pay grade so the idea is you take it to a GOOD Indy, plenty around, lots of recommendations available, you don’t have to put up with middle for diddle ones. Please yourself obvs, but you’ve obvs not been to one yet as you still have the issue, maybe time to change tack, do a little research, quit bending over, dropping your trolleys and taking it dry from the main stealers, average indies, and solve the leak properly once and for all. If you have to travel a little so what…? You haven’t had any luck so far with local bods.

It’s a thought no…? :driving:

As documented elsewhere these DCT leaks can be very difficult to resolve…myself and two indies incorrectly diagnosed sump leaks when in fact the O ring on the pressure filter cap was leaking ..but dribbling along a machined surface appearing to be a sump leak..

It took 7 attempts, two sump pans and no end of grief with over £350 worth of oil alone to finally fix..

The issue is that it’s a finicky device ..not used in present day BMWs..the ‘top’ BMW Indy didn’t diagnose it correctly as a new chap..ex Japanese car experience worked on my car..the other Indy had no experience of working on that specific box..

So needs skill and experience to troubleshoot it..IMHO…

Excuse my ignorance, but is this the same DCT box as in the N20 E89 variant?

Nope that’s the ZF8HP torque converter box..this is the Getrag dual clutch gearbox.the ZF is a doddle to service in comparison

The Getrag was used only because at the time the ZF 8 HP couldn’t handle the torque ..it was limited to 450 nm in most gears and 370 in a couple.

Once ZF upped the torque limit the Getrag was history..

The ZF outclassed the Getrag in almost every regard…
