One thing I’ll say: the Alpina is even more special than the Si. Rare, and with a name that evokes a reaction even from petrolheads that aren’t particularly into BMW- it’s got presence.
Wikipedia says the engine is a handbuilt 3.4-litre E5/2 inline-6, also in the E46 B3 S. It is an enlarged version of the S52B32 engine from the U.S version E36 M3. Max power 296 hp @ 6,300 rpm and 360 Nm torque @ 4,800 rpm. Engine mods include Alpina specific cylinder head, crankshaft and Mahle pistons. The exhaust system is Boysen all stainless steel

patriot66, very cool! I always thought they were based off the M54 rather than the S52, never considered it. Every day’s a school day, thanks!

There weren't many of any incarnations of Alpinas sold, in the UK or anywhere else. There was a very good reason for that. The selling price!

My B3 'biturbo' cost £47k new in 2008. :o
It had very little cost options too. I know cos the original sales invoice came with the car.

Of the 367 produced, there were only 167 RHD models made for the UK and we estimate that there are only about 100-120 still up and running.

Do you know the split wit the 'S' and non 'S'? I always thought that any non 'S' was not worth having.

They were all of the 'S' variant. The only differences were the 'Lux' and 'non Lux' versions.
