I just refreshed the paint on my wheel studs after having done them initially 2 years ago when I fitted my black MV3s. A quick going over with a wire brush and a thin coat of black Smoothrite and they look brand new again. I would say a thin coat of paint either sprayed or brushed is the key otherwise you may struggle to get your 17mm socket to fit.

Spent this morning removing and cleaning the wheel nuts off the Zed. Sprayed them with Hammerite satin black and they've come up a treat

I just wire brushed mine on the grinder, sprayed brake cleaner on to degrease, and put them in the Black & Decker Workmate!......Sprayed with a couple of coats of metal protecting paint from Screwfix, 10 months on, they look fine and haven't flaked/chipped.....
