Post by Max » Mon Jul 04, 2011 10:05 pm

Hi,
Just had the roof motor changed by James Paul Garage, near Horsham in Sussex. £710 all in.

Mine's in getting done now at Plough Motors in Durham, costing about £480 with ordering the motor from Joe at Soper.

We could turn this into a running thread on replacement costs across the country there seems to be so many failing at the minute!

May I ask how much for parts and how much for labour?

Either price sounds very reasonable to me, for some reason I thought it was a £1500+ job

Yeah mine came in at sub £500 too - not quite as scary as I had read previously!

£280 for the motor courtesy of Joe at Sopers.

£200 for the labour courtesy of Plough.

It's only the third time I've used them, but so far I can see them permanently getting my custom for almost anything that's more difficult than an oil change. They know their stuff and their labour rates are superb. :D

Oh and forgot to say, I think it used to be a £1,500 job, the original part number weighs in at £808 + VAT!!!

From what I can gather, BMW changed the part number when they re-designed the motor, and also more than halved the price, probably a belated attempt not to annoy Z4 owners too much! Last thing they would want is a reputation for making dodgy roofs on a car where the main USP is the quick electric roof!!

I had the roof motor fail back in Jan of this year. The dealer over here in California gave me an estimate of $1500 with the motor costing $400. So I would have been looking at about 2000 US dollars for the job. I don't know how labor costs translate with dollar vs pound but it sounds like it cheaper over on your side of the pond.

When I saw the estimate I did the job myself.

Hi, the breakdown

BMW Part - £266.67
Labour £325
VAT £118.33

A car loan for the day was an extra £10 plus the petrol I put in.

Another indie in Sussex quoted £704 + VAT ------------------- £868

How was the service at James Paul? i live in horsham and want to find myself a decent indi that i can use in the future.

The first thing i need done is recoding the passenger window as BMW re-coded the car and i have now lost the one touch on that window, and thus my GapTech module doesnt work properly anymore! roof goes up, drivers side window closes, passenger one stays resolutely stationary! GRRRR :x :x (i have tried the reset this sorted drivers side but not passenger)
35is Deep Sea, Extended White Leather, Comfort Package, Comfort Access, Prof Nav,Connectivity Pack, Prof Speakers, Adaptive Headlights, DAB, 326s 19in, SmartTop. Good God I love that noise!!
