Exhaust Mods

Post by Zowen » Wed May 01, 2024 12:41 pm

Hi everyone,

So I would like a bit of advice as honestly I'm a bit confused on how to mod the exhaust whilst keeping it legal.

From my understanding it has to be type/ec approved to be road legal, you aren't allowed to change a part exclusively to make it louder (has to be for a performance reason), you are allowed to remove/modify the res as this only changes the sound not the amplitude, you have to have all emission parts still in.

What are people's reccomendations for a stock system as I am wanting a bit louder and more growl as the stock system is a bit underwhelming from outside the car.

Would a new muffler like the magnaflow 11379 give me what I want and still be legal? or could I get new headers? I was wondering if any of you have experimented and what you reccomend?

If you're worried, stick with the big brands. I'm sure if it was needed, they'd have done the required legalities/paperwork for certification when developing the product.
I've got the Eisenmann system on my N52 Coupe and it sounds great, not loud or obnoxious.

A quick Google and I cannot find anything about the Type/ec being a requirement for MOT purposes.
As long as it has the correct number of silencers, emmissions are in check, it isnt falling off or isnt too loud.

I don't think there are any regulations on brand or approval in the UK, although I think many other countries in Europe have much stricter regulations. I know one forum member had the back-box deleted on his 3.0Si, but it was louder than I could have lived with!

My 2nd E86 had a custom cat-back system fitted that was great and my MC has Powerflow back-boxes that I also love! There are probably quite a few other options around for after-market back boxes.
Coupes because stunning!

See in the UK it's weird because something can pass an MOT but you can still be hit with warnings -> fines. For your exhaust system to be legal it has to be E marked/Type approved for each part which means it's road legal as otherwise it's supposed to be track only.

I doubt there's much chance that I'll get pulled and they check every part of my exhaust but I would like the peace of mind 😂

As long as it's not obnoxious or falling off, you'll be fine.

I've got the Eisenmann and it's great. Not loud, just perfect (but does need to get warm before it opens up) I get a lovely splutter on the overrun, not bangs, a nice rumble spluttering.

Hi Zowen. I live in Mawdesley, not far from Wigan. Happy to meet up with you and take you out in my Z4 so you can hear what it sounds like. I have Mike at Zed Shed(DLV)'s Secondary Cat Delete (internals) and modified back box combination. I've been running the back box since 2017 and the secondary cats delete (and a Supercharger !) for the last two years. In this time it's passed all its MOTs and never had any compliance issues, never been stopped by the Police etc. In fact I've only ever had positive comments on how good it sounds ! :D

depending on how tight your budget is you could consider a full system from Gravity performance, two systems available for the e85 depending on what engine you have.

I have the M54 engine and that cat back system is the exact sound I'm looking for! You don't think I'd get have any problems with it do you?
