E86 Carbon Black paintwork refresh.

Post by j3nks79 » Wed Apr 17, 2024 11:02 am

So the E86 is almost done. Two new rear quarters due to the old ones starting to bubble with rust.
Then I thought I may as well get it all painted. The roof is the only panel thats not being done. I’ve decided to fit a carbon fibre roof at the end of the year.
Should be finished soon.
Progress so far

You don't fancy keeping the matt/satin finish then :P

Didn’t even notice what it was.
It’s basically a table for my side skirts lol

Were new rear quarters easy to come by?

No not at all. Took me 8 months to find a pair of immaculate ones.
BMW wanted £650+ each. And one side was on back order.

WOW lots of working going into this. Are the rear 1/4s an issue with the E86 then?

Will look amazing with fresh paint & those CH's, 1x of the best wheels for these I reckon!

They rust from the inside out where the plastic brackets sit in the quarters.
Mine had started to bubble through the paint.
No point trying to rub down and fill because the rust will just come back.

Wheels are quite a rare fitment with 10J rears ET40.

You done the right thing there then, proper job. Sounds like it could be a problem for a few of these going forward, buyers beware and all that.

That’s what the inside looked like. I’ll be putting lots of rust proofing wax in all wheel arches when I get it back.

100% worth doing now you have those fresh ones on for sure. I spent the winter removing bits under the arches / floor pan before cleaning and waxing those areas as best as possible, just to preserve the life of the car further.
