New Coupe owner
Hello,
I'm from Holland and have been looking for a nice Z4 Coupe for a couple of months now. And I found one. In Belgium, so had to import him. But all went well and on the few dry-weather moments, I have driven it. A lot of fun
It is the second car besides the family car, purely intended for fun driving. Can be in the weekend or maybe the commute to work also.

I had an inspection done by my BMW specialist this morning where my 5-serie is also maintained. I certainly didn't buy the Z4 blind, but I wanted to know a little more details.
Fortunately, nothing crazy came out of it, other than some wear and tear and possibly some preventive maintenance.
For example, two hydro bearings are getting weak. rear shock absorbers are starting to rust a little and the coolant pump needs to be replaced.
And as a preventative measure, they say to replace the coolant expansion tank because it is still the original one.
The rest is in very good shape they said, as I thought, but nice to also have their confirmation
The Z4 has various engine sound modifications, which I already knew of course. But I find it too loud inside at highway speeds.
Now the question is how I am going to solve this, it is difficult to estimate in advance what the influence of a modification will be.
It now has an aFe Power air intake, which is fine I think. But the inward intake can be adjusted. There can be two foams inside the sound generator, I don't know how many it has right now, but I suspect none. My questions are:
- Is the aFe Power intake also adding more sound to the interior?
- Does anyone know where I can get new foam for inside the sound generator?
- Is completely shutting off the sound generator to the inside too much? (the garage said this was also an option)

- I would presume so.
- Local BMW dealer or put a wanted add on the forum .
- This would be my option as it also gives a bit more room when working on the car . You can always put it back again if it is not loud enough for you . Easy job to remove and replace

Welcome to the forum, Ben. Great looking interior leather you have.
Regarding the sound, blocking the sound generator, putting the foam back in (and probably, returning the AFE intake to stock) won’t make any difference to the sound at steady motorway speeds. You have much more noise from the tyres, exhaust and air outside the cabin than from the intake. All the mods are designed to increase the induction “roar” when you put your foot down and I agree, the top end can be a bit much with both pieces of foam removed. I say this just to manage your expectations, as the Z4 cabin is fundamentally quite a noisy space, not at all like a S-class.

ah tnx, will read up
And maybe I should test drive some more (only just got it ) to better understand the sound level at which speeds.

Welcome to the forum and lovely coupe you’ve got! We have an active E86 owners chat in NL, send me a DM if you want to join or if you have any other questions/need help1536Z4 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 29, 2024 12:36 pm - Is the aFe Power intake also adding more sound to the interior?
Yes, it’s considerably louder than stock and the sound generator pipe neatly transports that into the cabin, even when not physically connected to the intake itself like with the stock setup.
- Does anyone know where I can get new foam for inside the sound generator?
Since you’re in the Netherlands (Welkom, leuk dat je er bent!), you could go to the Ekris BMW parts webshop. Alternatively, order some cheap acoustic foam and make your own.

It’s an option for sure, and with the afe in place even worth considering. I’d experiment with the foam first though: put the one back that’s nearest to the cabin bulkhead and see what you think. I found it to be the right balance at the time
Four Alfa's and a Ducati later, I've turned to the dark side...
