E86 Coupe owners - Do your own roof vinyl wrap (VIDEO), get a paint like finish and save £££s

Hi guys,

Had a very well known member of the forum come up to the shop for a roof wrap a few weeks and recorded some tips on how to work it down using a tricky high gloss / low orange peel vinyl film. Word of note, this vinyl was covering a pretty large section of laquer peel to the rear section and small section bubbling to the front edge, i would NEVER recommend anyone to use vinyl in a way of a cover-up as its super thin and WILL show up degraded paint to some degree i will always be up front and say this to anyone trying to do so. This one came in from a lovely extremely knowledgeable owner from this forum , lovely fella from my local area. I was able to use an off-cut from another job and subsequently was able to cover the roof to a high standard for a really cost effective price point. The owner was a little disappointed that some of the roofs defects were visible after the vinyl wrap but i was really pleased with the overall standard of the job given the condition of the roof paintwork a definite 9/10.

The purpose of this video is for you coupe owners that don't want to pay for a fresh paint job, but want the black roof panel look or if your really inclined to do so, a cover up job ( not recommended but very doable) . I hope this helps someone somewhere so you can avoid the costs of a professional wrapper / painter - as this is very doable at home and probably at a cost of under £50.00 if successful which is quite enticing :D . final notes their are much easier films to work with on the market that don't offer this level of gloss / reflective nature, again avoid cheap ebay stuff as it wont last long and may life the paint on removal.

Alternative tools for a home install, basic felt tipped squeegee, hair dryer to soften film not stretch, a craft knife and another squeegee to lift the window trim to get the film under the rubber to create that paint like finish.

Thanks buddy, ive been correcting paintwork + installing films such as vinyl + early ppf since i was 18 ( im nearly 40) so i understand ive made that look easier than it is BUT, this is very very doable at home to save the end user a good amount of cash and get a great result. worth a try????

Looks great. I haven’t got the patience to wrap. Hats off to you. You make it look easy but it’s so difficult to do to that standard.

lol! that made me smile, maybe worth a go as theirs many talented people on this forum, worst that can happen is you scrap 45 quid, at best youve got a gloss black roof for near pennies.

Great video Byron, you make it look so easy!

I wouldn't dream of trying that on my car though, I struggle to wrap a Christmas present.

Enjoyable video Byron  . If you were to use a carbon fibre look vinyl how do you keep the lines straight as I would think as you stretch the wrap the lines would curve ?

hey buddy, not easy, at all.... basically get it glassed over the whole roof without stretching, heating only to soften the film then squeege it down bit by bit dealing with the issues as they arrive, key being no stretch, the moment you stretch you'll loose the weave and it will look utter pants.
